Big Damn Heroes: Rumbo, who rescues Fluke and other animals from animal experiments at a cosmetics company. It doesn't end well for him.

Recently I read The Last Dog on Earth, Adrian J. Walker’s excellent dystopian novel featuring dual narratives, that of Reg the human and - most memorably - that of Lineker the dog. I loved the book and enjoyed reading Lineker’s thoughts, and also found myself making a mental note, which was simply re-read James Herbert’s Fluke. After Bella dies of an illness, Fluke meets a street-wise dog named Rumbo who takes him to see a man named Bert who feeds them. Fluke matures into an adult dog and eventually realizes that he was once a man named Thomas P. Johnson, who died in a car crash.Written entirely in the first-person-perspective of Fluke, the tale is an endearing and emotive one that initially plays with a very definite coming-of-age theme. For the first half of the novel, the various adventures that Fluke finds himself within are both exciting and heart-warming, as well as enabling Herbert to really build upon the characterisation of Fluke. Meeting Rumbo, their subsequent friendship and time spent together, builds further tight bonds with the reader from early on.
