About this deal

If fishing at short range from high venues like piers, the top hook is likely to be lifted off the bottom by the angle of the mainline. Make the top snood slightly longer than the bottom snood to allow for this. Like with all sea fishing rigs it’s worth experimenting with it. You can adjust the length of the snoods or add more hooks. Just make sure the hooks can’t reach each other because that can lead to tangles. More hooks will mean the rig body will be longer and therefore more difficult to cast. The flapper rig is not very aerodynamic and is most suited for fishing short- to mid-range. Of all the sea fishing rigs, it’s the rig I use most of the time if I’m targeting flatfish. It’s also a good ‘scratching’ rig for when there are mostly smaller fish around. If I’m targeting bigger species, I prefer to use the semi-fixed pulley rig, see below. Consensus amongst many Flipper aficionados is that the rig works best, relatively short—certainly no more than 8-inches long (that’s 20cm to the kids). As such, it is at its most effective, the hooklink tightening for the ‘flip’ to flop over. I’m sure by now you all have a firm handle on skinned hooklinks, i.e. where to strip them and by how much, to allow the hook to move unimpeded. A nice heavy hooklink like TA’s original Tungskin is ideal, but do not be afraid to experiment, as the world really is your oyster when it comes to rig construction. For this rig, connect your main line to a strong leader line using a barrel swivel. Then connect the other end of the leader line to a weight using a swivel clip. When choosing the type of leader line, look for a strong monofilament or fluorocarbon line that is anywhere from 60-80lbs. This will allow the rig to handle a decent-size fish. And for absolute maximum casting range - particularly with long droppers on the rig, nothing will beat the loop rig version.

But you can also use the dropper loop rig with any kind of cut bait or natural bait, such as sand fleas, crabs or squid strips. However, many anglers prefer to use setups with multiple mosquito hooks for this. Beads or sequins are optional attractors on the hook snoods and can be held in position by adding a bait stop above them. Make these from 1cm length of silicon sleeving. Pass the line through the sleeve twice and then pull the line tight to form the stopping device. With many snoods popping out, this rig receives more friction from the air during the cast which slows it down and makes it fall sooner in the water. In fact, you can combine these two properties ingeniously. If there is a strong current flowing parallel to the beach, cast out your fish finder rig and let the weight settle on the bottom. The reason for this is that the weight and the hook are both located at the end of the line, and thus can’t get tangled with each other or with any other part of the rig during the casting process. The term flapper refers to the fact that the hook snoods hang loose and flap during the cast, so obviously, it is not the rig to choose if you need to fish a long-range. The best choice of rig for beach fishing in the UK often depends on various factors such as the species you're targeting, the local tide conditions and the type of seabed. However, some of the most commonly used rigs for UK beach fishing include the pulley rig, flapper rig and pennel rig. These rigs are designed to handle the varying conditions and target species that are typical of UK shorelines.

The flapper rig is most often used for surf fishing, though it can also be fished vertically from a boat or a pier. It is baited with cut fish or other natural bait. Flapper rig components While the fact that the sinker slides all the way down onto the hook initially seems to be counterintuitive, this rig architecture is ideal for avoiding line tangles. The flapper rig is one of the most popular line setups for surf fishing. With a smart design that allows casting multiple hooks at once, this rig offers systematically a higher bite per cast ratio and adds more exciting moments to fishing trips.

This fishing rig consists of a weight tied to the end of the line, as well two (or three) hooks that are attached to the leader via snoods tied to crimped swivels. Measure the length of the rig body between 3-5ft and tie on a 60lb swivel, which is eventually used (as shown) to attach the rig to a leader clip

The Carolina rig is one of the most versatile bottom fishing rigs that catches fish almost anywhere, and hence it comes as no surprise that it is also a great rig for fishing in the surf. As a rule of thumb, you should use at least 10 pounds of line weight for every ounce of your casting weight. And that includes the sinker and the bait. The best readymade sea fishing rigs for Dover sole feature a means to keep the bait hard on the bottom and also include things that will pique their interest, such as fluttering blades and beads or bright sleeves. Think about durability…

Next, tie the 20 to 30 lb test leader to the crimped swivel, measure out about 1 to 2 feet of line, cut it off, and tie the tag end to a hook with a snell knot.
