About this deal

The pins on the spike make it difficult for the birds to land, and if they do manage to gain access, they will find them uncomfortable without being injured. They will simply move on to an easier nesting or roosting location. All of our pigeon-proofing and bird control products are 100% humane. They are even recommended by PiCAS as the most humane type of pigeon-proofing available on the market. All Defender® Bird Spikes are easy to install with just a basic knowledge of DIY skills. The Defender® Thistle® is no different. Please note: These spikes have very sharp points; please handle them with care when installing and getting out of the box. Snappable Sections This wide stainless steel spike has 9 snap points where the user can break the strip into smaller sections with their fingers, allowing the pigeon spike to fit perfectly on any size ledge. No extra tools are required. As the manufacturer of Defender® Bird Spikes, Jones and Son Pest Control Supplies Ltd, we keep a close eye on the quality of the bird control products we produce. All our pigeon control products are made from high-quality materials such as Durolon; a UV Stabilised Polycarbonate, and 304 Grade Stainless Steel for the pins, which makes for an incredibly reliable bird control solution. If a seagull has already been using the area it may be heavily soiled with seagull droppings. If this is the case please see our "How to safely clean bird droppings guide" guide for more in-depth cleaning advice.

Snappable SectionsEach strip of Thistle® Bird and Pest Deterrent is 333 mm long, however, if a smaller strip is needed to finish a run or a small fence post needs proofing, the bird and pest spike can be snapped by hand in to shorter lengths. Along the base of the Defender® Thistle® are 4 grooves where the spike can be snapped into 5 smaller pieces that are 65 mm long. This is useful when installing on undulating, curved or uneven surfaces. Why are we the experts on bird spikes? The simple answer is that we don’t supply or manufacture any other type of bird control, we uniquely deal only with bird spikes and we have first-hand knowledge of bird control methods and installation. Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting any installation of seagulls spikes, it is essential that the area is clean, dry and free from droppings and debris. It is important to look up; it may be that the source of the mess is actually from ledges or pipes higher up on the building. If this is the case you will need to spike these as well. If this is not done, then droppings, twigs etc. may fall onto the seagull spikes below rendering them less effective.

Step 3 - Positioning: Start at one end of the guttering and clip each piece firmly into position. Continue along the guttering making sure no gap is left between the ends of the pigeon spikes. This mechanism places the gutter strip in the centre of the gutter. It hovers above the base of the gutter, allowing for the free flow of rainwater beneath. Another method is to use cable ties. Again make sure you have the correct length spike for the individual bar. Hold the strip in place above the bar and wrap the cable tie around the base and the bar. Feed the end through the fastener and pull tight until the spike base is held in place securely. One cable tie at each end should be sufficient. The ends of the cable tie can be cut short to neaten the appearance or left long. Along the base of the Defender® Gull Spikes are 9 breakable sections that can simply be snapped apart with your fingers. This makes it easy to fit the spike to any length of ledge without leaving any areas unprotected. Marine Grade Stainless Steel is now offered as an alternative to 304 Stainless Steel. It is particularly resistant to corrosion caused by sodium chloride. This makes it the ideal choice for use in harsh coastal areas. The good news is that they can easily be protected. There is a range of suitable Defender® Bird Spikes for this job, which will come down to the width of your timber cross beams. Most Defender® Bird Spikes are available in plastic or steel. Our steel spikes come with a 25 Year Warranty, and plastic spikes have a 15 Year Warranty. They all do the same job of humanely stopping pigeons from landing on your pergola.

Step 4 - Positioning: If the length of the pipe doesn’t fit the strip exactly, the Defender® Pipe Spike can be snapped to create smaller sections. You may need to reposition the cable tie further along the new shorter-length spike. The Defender® Narrow Plastic Bird Spike is a great solution for stopping pigeons from landing on any area with a depth of up to 7.5 cm (3 inches). Most commonly these are narrow walls, fences, pergolas, sills, ledges, balcony railings, and even around the top of trampolines and swings. The 8 mm wide base can easily be fixed to most surfaces using our Defender® Fixing Silicone Adhesive Glue or small screws or even cable ties. If the ledge width is 7.5 cm or more, simply attach a second row of spikes leaving as small a gap as possible between the tops of the pins. Alternatively, you may prefer to use one row of our Defender® Wide Plastic Pigeon Spikes that will protect ledges up to 15 cm (6 inches) and is ideal if the area is used for overnight nesting or roosting. How do plastic bird spikes work? All Defender® Bird and Pigeon Spikes are made in the UK using only the highest quality materials. Jones and Son Pest Control Supplies Ltd is a family-run business that prides itself on the manufacture of quality steel bird spikes and plastic pigeon spikes that will keep birds off your property, business or home. Due to the nature of bird control issues, the areas needing to be proofed will often be high up on your property and hard to access. If you intend to do the bird-proofing yourself, you must be confident using ladders and working at height. If you cannot do the work yourself, please get in touch with a roofer, pest control company or handyman to assist you.

The Defender® Narrow Plastic pigeon spike is designed for areas where pigeons or like-sized birds are perching during the day. These pigeon prevention spikes humanely stop pigeons from landing on these areas. Where can I use narrow pigeon spikes? Defender® Ridge Roof Spikes are made in the UK, in Devon, using only the highest quality materials. Jones and Son Pest Control Supplies Ltd design and manufacture these high-quality stainless steel bird and seagull ridge roof spikes. The husband and wife team, David and Kursty Jones, ensure all the Defender® Bird Control Products are not only high quality, but also long lasting and, most importantly, 100% effective.

We have two types of bird spikes, stainless steel spikes with a polycarbonate base and all polycarbonate spikes. Both work equally well, however the polycarbonate spikes are slightly more visible. The spikes come in a range of widths and spike densities depending on the depth of the area you are trying to protect. Add extra rows behind the first if needed. Leave as small a gap as possible between the rows; the pins should be almost touching to prevent the pigeons or seagulls from gaining access. Leave no gap bigger than 2.5 cm anywhere to prevent a pigeon or seagull from gaining a foothold. Next, you need to measure the width and depth of the area that needs protecting with a tape measure. Choose the most appropriate size Defender® Bird Spike bearing in mind that any area greater than 2.5 cm should be proofed. If you are ever unsure – call us on 01626 835055, and we can help advise on what products you may need.

Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting your Defender® Ridge Spikes installation you need to make sure that the apex ridge tiles are clean and free from moss, lichen, bird droppings and any dust or debris. This is to make sure that the silicone has a clean surface to adhere to. The Defender® Pipe Spike can protect all kinds of pipes for example drainage pipes, heating, air-conditioning and even pipes covered with lagging. The cable tie will wrap around any pipe with a diameter of up to 125 mm or 5 inches. Aerial clips can be attached to the base of the pigeon deterrent spike. They very simply snap onto the base. Whatever length of bird spike strip you need, 2 clips are generally all that is needed for each piece, one at either end. Ensure the clips are facing the same way, on the same side of the spike base and are in a straight line. These clips can then be used to attach spike strips to the various director elements or bars along the main length. Be extra careful not to overstretch the clips to fit over a particularly wide bar. This could eventually cause stress fractures to the clip. If the bars are particularly thin, you may need to add a little of the included silicone to the inside of the clip just to hold it in place and upright.Defender® Pipe Spikes have 9 grooves along the base which can be easily snapped by hand to make a shorter length strip. The cable ties can then be simply relocated to the ends of the shorter piece, this ensures that any size pipe can be fully proofed against perching or roosting birds. Defender® Ridge Spikes have 2 rows of stainless steel pins that fan out. With this angle of pins, the bird and seagull ridge deterrent will stop birds from landing on the apex of any roof. How do ridge spikes stop seagulls landing? The Defender® Seagull Control Spikes are designed with longer pins to enable them to stop seagulls. Therefore, if seagulls are causing your issue, this is the deterrent spike for you. We have three other gull deterrents that can be used for seagulls - The Defender® Ridge Spike, The Defender® Thistle®, and The Defender® Chimney Pot Strap. You can view all products suitable for seagulls here.
