The Bet" 2 Anton Pavlovich Chekhov plain 2021-12-17T19:22:27+00:00 Swarthmore Russian 037 1889 Anton Pavlovich Chekhov 55.75583,37.61778 In tough times, glimpsing a rainbow validates that storms do eventually pass. Their multi-hued arcs stretch over the full gamut of hopeful colors, reminding us of light ahead. Rainbows refract and reflect the sun’s pure white light into prismatic brightness. For all these reasons, rainbows vividly evoke feelings of hopeful rejuvenation and optimism. Conclusion Spending time in sunlight is often a great prescription for enjoying the warmth and hopefulness of the color yellow. Green can provide feelings of protection and safety which in turn will help increase feelings of hope and positivity.

Next to its association with nature, green can also be associated with financial growth and hope for better times to come. This green is new grass; it’s wet towels fresh from the shower. This green is your eyes when the candle lights are on. This green is the color of your soul. It’s the color of your soul when you’re with me.Aside from the already daunting challenge of translating everyday Russian into readable English, prison slang was a big part of communicating the feel of Irina Ratushinskaya's experience in Soviet “reeducation” camps. Alyona Kojevnikov, who translated the version of Grey is the Color of Hope that I read (which is actually the only version that exists, as far as I know) did not do a stellar job at this. For example, early on Ratushinskaya relates a few of the common prison terms, one of which was translated as "warmer". Ratushinskaya defines this as “the acquisition of something not officially permitted, such as [the:] exchange of sweets for cigarettes. The first, obvious interpretation strikes me immediately – something to warm the heart” (p. 11). I can get past the use of the word “sweets” by thinking of it as just a word I would never use (unless, of course, I was disguised as an evil witch and trying to lure some unsuspecting kids into my gingerbread house – and even then I would probably say “sweeties”), and by accepting that maybe in some other English-speaking city someone else might use it. The translation of “warmer”, though, was disappointing. I could only imagine that this was one of those charming Russian words that end in nik, like tyeplovnik or something else that sounds really fun. “Warmer” doesn't really convey the sense of usefulness that a word ending in nik has, and also it’s stupid. No badass American prisoner would use the word “warmer”. I admit that it would take some poetic license to come up with a better word that conveys that meaning in English, but come on, Alyona Kojevnikov! Can you stop taking everything so literally, or do I need to call Seamus Heaney in to replace you? (Always time for a Beowulf joke, right?)

Simply wanting something is not the same thing as exercising the unique function of imagination and will that characterize hope. What is missing for most people is an actual expectation or certainty about hope itself. This classic good versus evil fantasy adventure builds on a fascinating idea of a world devoid of colour and joy. But there's much more to it than that. I’d have a library with every story ever written waiting on the shelves for me. But it would be a library with a twist: I’d be able to meet the characters from my favourite books face to face! On September 17, 1982, Irina was arrested for anti-Soviet agitation. In April 1983, she was convicted of "agitation carried on for the purpose of subverting or weakening the Soviet regime", sentenced to seven years in a labor camp followed by five years of internal exile. She was released on October 9, 1986, on the eve of the summit in Reykjavík, Iceland between President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. In color psychology, green promotes balance and harmony. Its association with hope springs from these feelings of stability. The color of happiness and optimism. Yellow is a cheerful and energetic color that brings fun and joy to the world. It makes learning easier as it affects the logical part of the brain, stimulating mentality and perception. It inspires thought and curiosity and boosts enthusiasm and confidence.

Working in tandem with green and aquamarine, yellow can be found in abundance in our natural world. In fact, the warmth of the sun’s rays often represents the color yellow and hopefulness most of all. Plant life and our watery ecosystems can’t survive without sunlight. This is often why we feel so hopeful in the warmth of the sun. Sunshine is a must for a good mood. Our bodies receive much-needed Vitamin D and serotonin from this light source!During the narrative, we meet the persona of death. She (yes, she) has a sense of humour similar to another famous scythe-wielding personification. (Think Pratchett). There is also the Ferryman. His task of ferrying the souls over the river is causing him some angst. Someone is taking the souls from the other side. For this reason, white retains a psychological link to unadulterated hope. Blue as the Peacefulness of Hope Along with green, the color yellow is also associated with hope in many contexts. Reasons for yellow’s tie to hope include: Orange can feel like youthful zest, so it’s a popular color for brands that appeal to children. It combines the warmth and heat of red with the playfulness and joy of yellow. Beyond this, it’s a great choice for really any brand that aims to exude a sense of energy or intensity. When orange is muted, it can feel autumnal, which makes it perfect for any brand leaning into an earthy color palette. Using orange in design
