About this deal

The main meal is normally pork or mutton ribs served with 'surkal' (white or red cabbage, finely chopped and cooked with caraway seeds and vinegar) and potatoes. During Advent/December in Norway, sometimes small gifts are given on each day of December leading up to Christmas. These are known as Adventsgave or Kalendergave. There is a similar tradition in Denmark. The gifts are sometimes used together with a chocolate Advent calendar! Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

The lighthouse doesn't emit light all year round. Because of the Arctic latitude, the area doesn't need additional light from May to August each year thanks to the midnight sun. The narrow alleys of the old Hanseatic city Bergen is a wonderful setting when you want to get into the Christmas spirit. You’ll find a big Christmas market at Festplassen, with a Ferris wheel and merry-go-rounds. The city is also home to the world’s largest gingerbread town. Watch as they switch on the lights at the top of the city mountain Fløien, and round off the evening with a Christmas concert. 9. Henningsvær

The ferry from Bodø to Lofoten can be rough

For accommodation, the three best places I’ve stayed on Lofoten are Svinøya Rorbuer (my top choice, plus their restaurant Børsen is amazing!), Eliassen Rorbuer in Reine (probably the most famous place in Lofoten), and Lofoten Links Lodges (off the beaten path and the BEST for seeing the Northern Lights!). I also am dreaming about staying at Nusfjord Arctic Resort, which is a splurge but looks incredible. Here are two 'extra verses' written by Ivar Kalleberg. The top one is his 'hoax verse' and the second on is one more in the spirit of Christmas! If you've ever taken a boat trip in the inner Oslofjord, you'll surely have seen Dyna lighthouse. Located on a tiny reef near the Bygdøy peninsula, the building is one of Norway's best-known lighthouses. Dyna lighthouse in the Oslofjord In some parts of Norway, children like to go carol singing. Often children will dress up as characters from the Christmas Story, such as the Shepherds and Wise Men, and go singing from house to house in their local neighborhood. Sometimes they carry with paper stars on them. So regardless of what the weather forecast is saying, bring some rain gearand warm layers that you can remove if the sun comes out. And ifyou’re planning on doing lots of walking or hiking, definitely bring some really good waterproof pants with you.

Lofoten is one of thoseplaces that is so beautiful it almost doesn’t seem fair. Like, people actually get to live there? Could I?? After dinner and dessert (often leftover rice porridge mixed with whipped cream, called riskrem, served with a red berry sauce), the gifts are opened. Perched on the Steilene islets in the Oslofjord, this lighthouse exhibits a classic design with its white tower and red detailing. Surrounded by the pristine waters of the fjord, it provides a serene and photogenic destination for visitors. Hvaler Lighthouse (Hvaler) Built in 1899, Sletringen was manually operated for almost 100 years until its automation in 1993. It's operational for 10 months of the year. From mid-May to mid-July the light is switched off as there is enough natural daylight. Grip: In the middle of the oceanMost people outside of Norway think Christmas time here must be really magical, winter markets, snow everywhere, colourful lights, reindeer strolling along the streets, and of course, Lapland is the home of Santa Claus, right? Romjul is the week between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, known in English as the 'Interscotia'. [ citation needed] Christmas wasn't celebrated in Norway until about 1000 or 1100, when Christianity first came to the area. Before this people celebrated jul or jòl in the middle of winter. It was a celebration of the harvest gone and a way of looking forward to the spring. Lots of beer (juleol) was brewed and drunk in honour of the old pre-Christian/pagan Scandinavian gods. Here's yet another distinctive lighthouse for the list! Alnes lighthouse tower is known for its boxy shape and unusual colour-scheme of white with two red bands. Alnes lighthouse

In 2008 an extra verse was thought to have been discovered (that involved a cat!). However this was a hoax by a Norwegian photographer called Ivar Kalleberg. Most people thought this was quite fun and that Alf Prøysen would have liked the joke! Don’t miss the lighting of the world’s most famous Christmas tree, which takes place in Trafalgar Square on Thursday the 1st of December 2022. The 25-metre-high tree is a gift from the people of Norway to London, in thanks for Britain’s support in World War II. This historic tradition has happened every year since 1947 and signals the countdown to Christmas in London. Recycling the tree The hotel pitches the room as perfect for couples, describing it as “rustic and modern, an unforgettable experience to share with someone you love.” Probably my favorite activity I’ve done on Lofoten is a sea eagle RIB safari to Trollfjorden. The views are amazing and I saw SO MANY eagles. You can read more about my experience on the safari here.

Tourism has just recently exploded on the Lofoten Islands

Located on a small island in the Sklinna archipelago, this lighthouse offers a remote and picturesque experience. Its white tower, perched atop rugged cliffs, overlooks the Norwegian Sea, providing visitors with a sense of tranquility. Vardøhus Fortress (Vardø) The day had been put aside as a day off from fishing and for Paul and Bob to visit a local lighthouse that had been converted into some stunning accommodation. We had organised for them to see this unique property on a small rib-style boat, and due to the swell of the sea, it was a roller coaster journey, completely safe and great fun. For the entirety of the day and evening, Paul and Bob filmed on location and were catered for by a local chef who cooked them some famous dishes to sample. The exact date that ends jul varies. One common date is the thirteenth day of Christmas, Epiphany, of the Mass of St. Knut, on January 7. Another is the old gisladag or tjuendedag, the twentieth day, on January 13, also called Epiphany Day. By Candlemas on February 2, the Christmas tree and all decorations have usually been removed. The term jul is common throughout Scandinavia, referring to a period of time that lasts several weeks in total. That being said, most people use jul to refer to the week stretching from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve.

The old tradition of brewing Yule ale and drinking in honor of the Æsir, friends, and kinfolk also remained in the time following Christianization, with the law demanding people to brew enough as well as strong enough. However, people were now to drink in honor of Christ and the virgin Mary instead. [3] [4]

At 5 pm, when church is over, the bells toll and we say that they are ‘ringing Christmas in’. At 5 pm, it is officially Christmas Eve, and when we get home, the whole house smells of Pinnekjøtt. In good, understated Norwegian fashion, houses are decorated only with white lights — never colored — in the windows. You'll see some traditional candles, but electric lights posing as candles are more common. A plastic Santa or manger scene on the lawn, or garish colored lights along the eaves would probably put you in the neighborhood doghouse. It makes sense in a land that seems to have organized itself beyond a need for God. Amongst all the great Norwegian holiday traditions, this has to be my favourite. And it may also prove to be the hardest to explain. The government still owns most of the lighthouses, and co-operate with local groups to keep them open for visits, tours, and accommodation. Others are privately owned and commercially operated.
