Jan A soldier fell a height of 50 feet sustaining a compound fracture of his right wrist and an extensive compound fracture of the right thigh. The fracture extended from his knee joint to the middle of the thigh from which several pieces of bone protruded. The femur was completely shattered, as also were the patella and head of tibia. His jaw was also fractured. On the 28 January Surgeon Alexander Melvin decided to amputate the right leg. The patient endured the operation with fortitude but died on 30 January. These squadron designations were intended to represent each of the three Territorial Force mounted rifles regiments from which the OMR drew its personnel. As far as possible, each squadron drew its recruits from its geographical region until September 1917. From then on, men were sent overseas as generic mounted rifles reinforcements but were still generally assigned to their region’s unit. Further reading Messenger, Charles (16 March 1994). Celer et Audax was the motto of the British 60th Regiment (Royal Americans) formed in 1755 in North America. Its 1st Battalion was commanded by the renowned Light Infantry expert Colonel Henry Bouquet. After the American War of Independence the 60th Regiment moved to Canada. The 5th Battalion 60th Regiment, formed in 1798, were green uniformed riflemen who served with distinction in the Napoleonic Wars in Portugal and Spain in the early 1800s. Their first commander was Colonel Francis de Rottenburgh who wrote the British Army Light Infantry training manual of that period. Many of his ideas can be seen to be the forerunners of modern infantry concepts. Nov Ernest James Parker born 21 Oct 1895, son of Hannah Lizzie and CSgt Barzillai Parker of Floriana.
