About this deal

n.b. these novellas were available as e-books prior to publication of the full title. Pirata series (with T. J. Andrews) [ edit ] I want to read the rest of the series because this book can be read as a stand alone but I want to learn more about these characters.

Asked by the Edinburgh Book Review about the inspiration behind his interest in the Roman era, Scarrow said, "Firstly, great Latin teachers – Gordon Rodway and then Reg Nash, who inspired a love of the language and more enduringly a fascination with Roman history and culture. Secondly, when I was growing up in the seventies swords and sandals epics seemed to be on the TV regularly. Not to mention the brilliant I, Claudius". When Emperor Nero's infatuation with his mistress is exploited by political enemies, he reluctantly banishes her into exile. Cato, isolated and unwelcome in Rome, is forced to escort her to Sardinia. Sardinia has long been plagued by tribes of bandits living wild in the centre of the island. These proud decedents of the original inhabitants of Sardinia have been causing problems in recent months, raiding the local villages and ambushes caravans. Taking command of Sardinia’s entire garrison, Cato begins to work out a strategy to defeat the locals and regain his position in Rome. However, this proves harder than originally anticipated as Cato needs to contend with a disorganised military force, a dangerous plague that is beginning to overwhelm the island and a surprisingly competent group of bandits with unparalleled knowledge of the local landscape. Worse, Cato begins to have dangerous feelings for Claudia, feelings which his enemies will exploit and which could set the entirety of Rome against him. Can Cato pacify Sardinia before his entire force is decimated, or have his adventures finally come to an end? Eagles of the Empire is a series of historical military fiction novels written by Simon Scarrow. The series began in July 2000 with the publication of Under the Eagle, and as of March 2022 there have been 21 novels released in the series, with the 22nd novel due in November 2023. [1] This is the 21st installment in the author's "Eagles of the Empire" series which seems like it may be coming to an end in a book or two - but then again, maybe not. Out of all the books in the series, this is most definitely the best. And when you get to the end, you know there will be at least one more because there are too many loose ends.

Because of his palace upbringing, Cato is well-read, often portrayed as more cerebral and forward-thinking than Macro. Macro is dismissive of this at first, but eventually comes to respect Cato's talent for thinking ahead and seeing "the big picture." I have found the previous two books The Emperor’s Exile a waste and ponitless it was just written to get Cato to Britain to join up with Macro again. This is the twenty-first book in the series and honestly, it’s the one I’ve been waiting for. The story of the rebellion of Boudica is well known to those of us growing up in the UK and I was so excited that this series was finally going to cover these events. The way Simon Scarrow has fleshed out the characters and brought them to life is incredible. I’ve always appreciated how the morality of the Roman invasion has been discussed over this series and how Macro and Cato genuinely see Rome as a guiding light of civilisation. Their insistence that the conquered isles will benefit and should be grateful eerily echoes the arguments of the much later British Empire. I think the biggest mistake Simon Scarrow made when writing these books was to make Macro as old as he was at the start, he could’ve easily made him five years younger and it would’ve made no difference to the story or series as a whole. It doesn’t lose the star because of that, but it finally came to a head in this book when Macro departs about a third of the way through to see out his retirement in Britannia, and was obviously gutting as Macro is the best character! Cato is leading a Legion in Wales reluctantly whilst Macro now no longer a Legionary is in the reserves but defending Colchester.A brilliantly written story with an intense atmosphere throughout, great fight scenes and an unbreakable bond of brotherhood that is intoxicating.

Jonathan has also written; directed three award winning short films ROADSIDE, THE PERFECT MURDER and LA BELLE DAME SANS MERCI BY JOHN KEATS. He is currently in post production on ABOUT BEFORE.

Eagle Books In Publication Order

At the beginning of the book you'll find two well-drawn maps of South-East Britannia and of Londinium in AD 59, as well as a Chain of Command, and not to forget a Cast List, with figures featuring in this great tale. Jonathan wrote, produced & directed his first feature film SUMMER RAIN (released on DVD in 2006). It won three Best Film Awards and several other awards for acting; photography as well as numerous nominations at film festivals around the world. Boudicca: a young British noblewoman, who Macro becomes smitten with in the third novel, When the Eagle Hunts. What follows is a typical adventure but with Apollonius partly taking Macro’s place. I really like his character and enjoy how Scarrow creates individual personalities, especially with Apollonius being more morally ambiguous than the others. I did miss Cato and Macro’s banter but Apollonius and the other characters make up for it, and was particularly sad that Paulinus was killed off.

On arrival in Sardinia, Cato is faced with undertrained and badly equipped troops as well as a deadly plague that is sweeping the island. Despite these Cato is able to comp!eye his mission although this was very close run and came at personal cost to him.Meanwhile, Cato was charged with accompanying Emperor Nero's mistress Claudia Acte into exile on Sardinia, with the bulk of the novel then following Cato, the burgeoning romance between him and Claudia and events on that island.
