About this deal

There are cars with standard spring rear suspensions which can cope with high nose weights of up to and exceeding 150kg. One word of warning: none of the scales mentioned are subject to the Weights and Measures Act and so they should only be regarded as a guide.

Having the nose weight of your caravan outside of its rated limits, either below or above, can significantly impact towing performance. The best that anybody can hope for is a mean starting figure but I should imagine that the variation will be more than the tolerance for any measuring device. However, the severity of pitching can also change depending on other factors, such as towing speed. An incorrect caravan noseweight is not the primary cause of lateral instability. However, it can be a factor. Typically cars which have adaptive and adjustable rear suspension systems can handle higher tow ball nose weights. This can obviously lead to instability and serious accidents and here at Caravan Guard we’ve dealt with many caravan insurance claims as a result of poor stability caused by incorrect loading over the years. Peter – As long as the noseweight is within the recommended limits then shouldn’t be an issue with it being a Twin Axle. As you say they do carry weight better but also weigh more themselves making the 85% loading rule more of an issue than noseweight.

There are three numbers you need to be aware of to work out exactly what the nose weight should be when you are towing your caravan. Those numbers are:Position the piece of wood on the scales. This is to spread the load and reduce the risk of damage to your scales. One of these important weight restrictions refers to the maximum load exerted on the car’s towball once it has been hitched up to a caravan – otherwise know as the noseweight. Following stringent safety guidelines is not always enough to avoid problems. Caravans can be at risk of theft and damage. Should the worst happen, you could be liable to cover any financial losses if you don’t have suitable protection—whether it’s your fault or not.

Nose loading is variable, it will alter every time that the caravan passes over a bump or dip in the road surface.

John discusses how a correct caravan noseweight is important for towing stability. Pitching & Lateral Instability When it comes to an electronic gauge, this is fitted onto the tow ball on the tow cars, and the caravan is then hitched to it. The nose weight is shown on the screen.

Each noseweight gauge shall be supplied with user instructions that shall contain at least the following For instance, if the nose weight of the caravan is too high (and above your car’s noseweight limit), you can experience a reduced steering feel. The effects aren’t just limited to the towing vehicle. If you have a twin axle caravan that is over the noise weight limits, then this can lead to uneven and unwanted tire wear. If the nose weight is too high, then less pressure and weight will be on the rear axle. This means that the rear axle tires will experience less rear, but the front axle tires will bear the majority of the wear, tear and pressure. The chassis manufacturer stamps both the maximum noseweight and the maximum load that the coupling is designed to carry on the coupling. These figures are identified by the letters ‘S’ and ‘GA’ respectively. The towcar’s maximum noseweight will be found in the owner’s manual, whilst the maximum noseweight on the towbar will be found on the towbar plate. Load the caravan to its MTPLM in the typical method; park it on a flat, hard, level surface area-- concrete or tarmac, not turf-- with the steadies raised
