About this deal

Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. Tasting notes are a pretty arcane, nebulous business – so much of it is completely personal – and no one starts off with a big vocabulary of them. Like anything else, it’s just a case of tasting lots of whiskies, and maybe just thinking of one or two elements that stand out most strongly in each one.

Maybe it got too costly, maybe the supply of ex-Oloroso casks has dwindled, maybe it’s a combination of the two factors. I’d say “who knows” but I’m sure Benromach’s distiller, blender and accountants know. All I know is that I’m ready to get to drinkin’ and see how this compares to the old 10. It is a quality product, perhaps the best 10 year old matured whisky I've ever tried. There is no sign of youth in it whatsoever, it is more like a 12 year old, possibly all the way up to a 14 year old matured scotch.Mouth: quite smooth, with elegant smoke, oranges and herbal honey. Hints of eucalyptus and mint. Some crushed peppercorns. Plummy sweetness but also dried nuts and liquorice. Still this subtle dustiness – really nice. Benromach 10 is the starting point in the Benromach range. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and some Sherry barrels for 9 years. Later on, it is married for a year more in Sherry barrels. It is bottled at 43% abv.

That is this whisky.The more you’ll taste, the more you’ll zone in on the little differences, and the broader you vocabulary will organically become. In reality there are normally no more than two or three “dominant” characteristics in a whisky, which tend to be the ones we flag up first in tasting notes. The other flavours and aromas are where things get particularly individual and personal – for instance where I’ve said “peach” another taster might get a different stone fruit – or perhaps a different fruit entirely.

Stop the garbage marketing fluff. When you let it breathe and open up the nose on this is one of the best, very oldskool. Those aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans, nuts and chocolate is truly something to behold. It's a complex interplay between creamy vanilla, nuts, roasted coffee beans, chocolate, dark fruits and salted caramel.
