About this deal

The final compute workload we'll look at is Agisoft Metashape's photogrammetry benchmark, where Alder Lake is again the chart topping configuration. Performance gains here aren't as strong as previous Adobe suite tests, but we're still seeing at least a 10 percent performance gain over the next best configuration tested which is a respectable result. Power Consumption For testing the i7-12700H we've run two power configurations: a long-term PL1 power limit of 45W, Intel's default spec for these chips, as well as 75W, which is a common boosted power level seen across many laptop vendors. For productivity workloads, where time is money, you might be able to justify the cost of high-end DDR5, but you'll also want to make sure the 12900K is the fastest processor for that workload, otherwise the Ryzen 9 5950X or a Threadripper CPU might be a better investment. Shopping Shortcuts:

Processors that support 64-bit computing on Intel® architecture require an Intel 64 architecture-enabled BIOS. Interestingly, Adobe Photoshop is more sensitive to memory bandwidth and this benefits DDR5 memory as they produced the best results. That said, DDR4-3600 and 3200 CL16 were not a great deal slower than most of the DDR5 kits, but if you're after maximum performance in this application, the faster the DDR5 memory the better. Certain demanding applications, like Adobe Premiere, can be operated on an i5 processor. Of course, the advantages become more pronounced when utilizing an i7, particularly when it comes to gaming. The most recent desktop i7 variants have increased core count and threads, accompanied by turbo frequencies surpassing 5GHz. While an i5 can manage lighter tasks, an i7 proves optimal performance for video and audio editing, solidifying its prowess in these domains. All models support: SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AVX2, FMA3, Speed Shift Technology (SST), Intel 64, XD bit (an NX bit implementation), Intel VT-x, Intel VT-d, Hyper-threading, Turbo Boost 3.0, AES-NI, Smart Cache, Thread Director, DL Boost, and GNA 3.0. Simply put, a Core i5-equipped system will be less expensive than a Core i7-equipped PC, if all else is equal. But in most cases, if you're comparing apples to apples (that is, a desktop chip to a desktop chip, or a laptop chip to a laptop chip, and the same generation to the same generation), the Core i5 will have fewer, or dialed-down, capabilities. A Core i7 will typically be better for multitasking, media-editing and media-creation tasks, high-end gaming, and similar demanding workloads. Often, though, the price difference will be small, so it's worth playing around with the online configurator of whatever PC you're buying to see if you can afford a Core i7-powered machine.Cores +– Handles pretty much everything you can throw at it.
