About this deal

I'm not sure. I've bodged plenty things to an adequate standard before - if you're buying relatively expensive new kit it's nice if it works sweetly! Keep the mech but change the cassette (and chain) for 11spd items? If you go for 105, on the other hand, you could swap to Ultegra or Dura-Ace gradually as each component wears out. That might be attractive, but only if you’re realistically likely to do this.

Both groupsets use the same material to make the front derailleur. This is aluminum coupled with a chain guide that is stainless steel and then chrome-plated.I don't understand where the leverage ratio comes in to the degree that the brakes won't work, and thus must be used with... So it looks like you'll pull 3.78mm when you really want 3.92mm on a 10 spd cassette (the pitch tables say 3.74mm and 3.95mm - presumably due to rounding effects) I have what is mainly a 10sp triple Shimano 105 setup (5703) and a Shimano XT Shadow 9sp (M772) rear derailleur on my 'winter' bike. In my experience it shouldn't require any special contorting at the pinch bolt (the so-called 'hubhub' method?) and the only adaptation I've had to make is to cut the cable outer to insert a Jagwire inline adjuster as this particular model of rear mech does not have a barrel adjuster. Tiagra is a really impressive groupset. It does everything you want from a mid-level road bike with only a few minor quibbles. The biggest decision is whether you're really fussed about having the 11-speed of Shimano's more expensive 105.

I replaced the long cage Tiagra 4700 with a shortcage, and went for the 105 10 speed (5700) which you would think would be a straight swap... It's not. It's both better looking and better performing than the previous Tiagra, and in the changes that Shimano has made, the gap to the more expensive 105 has been significantly narrowed. The most notable improvement is the updated shifter bodies, which function very similarly to the more expensive groupsets, with the same shifter body shape. And the new chainset is a much better-looking bit of kit too. It doesn't look cheap, it looks expensive. That's good. The groupset I've been testing came attached to a bike, so I wasn't able to weigh all the individual components – and Shimano hasn't published a weight yet. So we called them in and weighed them for you. Here are the numbers: As you can see there isn't a huge amount of difference in the weight of these two so the biggest difference is that the Tiagra brake levers run a 10-speed system whereas 105 is an 11-speed. The latest caliper brake design from Shimano is called SLR-EV Dual Pivot - this is available on 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace, so not Tiagra.Right now my fitness isn't what it was so finding myself spinning on the smaller front ring just for bigger hills, which I never used to need to do. However I think this will only be tempory as fittness is noticably getting better again day by day.
