About this deal

A close up on the witcher characters is the unofficial title of Sword of Destiny book, I swear! It was very enjoyable to remeet with the men and women I came to love in The Last Wish. They are now a bit less of a mystery and more like old friends to me.

Screw Destiny: Geralt refuses to lay any claim on the surprise child he is destined for because he does not want to believe in destiny, even though it's clear he really does want a child. A Little Sacrifice. A deconstruction of The Little Mermaid, with few dashes of The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: The king in the end of The Bounds of Reason. He wants a nearby kingdom, but local nobles don't want him to marry the princess, so he plans to use an ancient prophecy (saying someone bringing a dragon's head will become king) to his advantage. After spending some time with the mercenaries hired to slain said dragon, however, he decides that, since he has a bigger and better army than the other kingdom, he doesn't need a dragon's head. He also figures that, since the local nobles can't stop him, they'll come up with some way to justify his solution. An Offer You Can't Refuse: The fake inquisitor gives Geralt one of these when he is trying to hire him to find the doppelganger. Geralt doesn't want to because not only is Dudu not evil, there's no actual way to find a man who can shapechange in a city of 30,000 people. Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The Battle of Sodden Hill, where the Northern Kingdoms united and successfully repelled the Nilfgaardian invaders, happens entirely offscreen. We only hear about it from Yurga.

Like the original book, Sword of Destiny is a collection of six novellas (minus a Framing Device) that continue the trend of merrily deconstructing your favorite fairy tales, though the motif of You Can't Fight Fate comes across even stronger. Something More" was adapted into the two episodes that ended season one of The Witcher: "Before a Fall" and "Much More". Duke Agloval is far from impressed with Geralt's report of an intelligent race residing below the sea at Dragon Fang. Dismayed by the news, the Duke and his court discuss options including waging war on the sea creature's. He refuses to pay Geralt once again for the service the Witcher has provided, as in the Duke's opinion the job was incomplete. The Duke makes Geralt an offer to be the skipper of his armed guard until the problem is eradicated, in return for lodgings and warm food. Geralt refuses, and once the Duke claims Geralt to have no choice, Essi interjects. She exclaims to the Duke how he cannot buy Geralt, merely hire him to undertake work. He cannot own Geralt, and she imparts wisdom on the Duke not to interfere with the vasts of the ocean or what dwells below the waves at Dragon Fang. The Duke, with his usual stubbornness informs her that either himself, or his grandsons, or grandsons' grandsons will conquer the ocean as his ancestors did in the past, this time without requiring the Witcher's aid. With a gleam in her eye, Essi reveals the gravest of realities to the Duke, as at that moment Sh'eenaz appears. She has been transformed into a woman with legs and is capable of speaking the common tongue, having made a sacrifice of no longer being a mermaid so she can be with the one she loves.

Tropes found in the book:

Supernaturally Young Parent: In Something More, Geralt meets his mother, Visenna, who looks younger than him. Justified, because she's a sorceress. The Wild Hunt: Gets its first mention in A Shard of Ice. Its depiction there slightly differs from what we learn in the Saga, likely as being a personal opinion. Armies Are Evil: Geralt thinks murder, plunder, and worse are just normal consequences of war. Dandelion says that Nilfgaard is worse. In 2001, a Television Series based on the Witcher cycle was released in Poland and internationally, entitled Wiedźmin (The Hexer). A film by the same title was compiled from excerpts of the television series but both have been critical and box office failures. But hey, it's not ALL bad. Just so you know, I deny ever writing what you are about to read. It only exists in your alcohol-drenched little head. You shouldn't drink and read, you know. It's not the most sensible behavior, you know. Follow my example! Drink chamomile tea at all times!

The beginning of the first story sets it as one: some citizens are considering taking Geralt's properties, while Geralt himself is fighting the basilisk hunting their own town.I have also previously written about the first book in the series, titled The Last Wish, which you can find here: The Witcher: The Last Wish The Bounds of Reason. A deconstruction of dragon-slaying epics. Our Dragons Are Different is prominent. Does This Remind You of Anything?: Yennefer uses the Snow Queen myth to talk about her relationship with Geralt. Hero of Another Story: Sh'eenaz doesn't have much screen time in A Little Sacrifice, but it's her offscreen actions that resolve both the conflicts involving the impending war with the Fish People and her dysfunctional relationship with the local duke.

I am quite happy that I enjoyed those two books before the main series, I mean usually short story collections don’t work for me for some reason but those ones did and those introduced the characters so now it will be easier to read the main series! Gearalt decides to confront Yennifer on this new information, hoping to convince her that his love is true and her love of Geralt should not be denied. Instead he is left with the realisation he is just another number, another one of her fellow followers, at least that is how he feels. Geralt decides to confront Istredd, and the two men agree the only way to make Yennifer choose between them is a fight to the death. A sorcerer against a Witcher. The mayor discovers their intentions to battle and tries to persuade Geralt to leave town and never return for a pricey sum of gold coins. The Witcher is having none of it, knowing he would rather battle and die than run away from a chance with the woman who stole his heart.

Elements of "Sword of Destiny" were adapted in The Witcher episode "Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials" (1st Season). Bus Crash: Essi Daven, Geralt's Temporary Love Interest in A Little Sacrifice, is bluntly mentioned to have died of small pox four years later in Vizima.
