About this deal

When I was getting ready to read the Shades of Magic series, I kept hearing about what fantastic representation Lila was and how exciting it was to have a non-binary character be in the position of protagonist. What I found was a poorly written stereotype absolutely incandescent with misogyny. The representation. This is one of the most diverse casts in terms of gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, and race I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Not only our both our protagonists queer, but so are the majority of the primary cast. Flora/Florian in particular is incredible non-binary/genderfluid representation (and they’re also not the only NB person in this story!) a b Plath, James (September 28, 2013). Evelyn also goes through tremendous change, shifting from a pampered girl to someone who has to learn how to use her wits to fend for herself. When we first meet her, she’s used to doing whatever she wants and commanding her servants, which we spill out when she’s on the ship. Evelyn also has a big old streak of spite related to her parents, which is fair, since they’ve sold her through marriage to the highest bidder. What Is a Sea Witch?

In 2016, Rebel Wilson performed the role of Ursula at a stripped-down concert version of The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl, which featured the songs from the film and four songs from the Broadway musical. [90] Wilson was praised for her performance, which was described by The Huffington Post as "pitch perfect." [91]

At the behest of Disney executives Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg, director and screenwriter Ron Clements was among several film-makers instructed to research new story ideas that could potentially be adapted into the studio's next major animated film release. [3] Clements first discovered Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale " The Little Mermaid" at a local bookstore, and began deliberating why Disney had never attempted to adapt the story before. [3] Clements eventually learned that Walt Disney himself had actually attempted to adapt the fairy tale into a feature-length animated film as early as the 1930s, [4] but the project was ultimately shelved due in part to its sad ending. [5] [3] Clements suggested "The Little Mermaid" to Katzenberg, who finally green-lit it after having first rejected it. [4] Another thing I loved about is how magic works in this world. When we see the witch later in the book, she makes spells by telling stories. And in those, we basically get short stories that sit within the novel. The Pros Much like the characters, I adored how this book is written. Depending on whose perspective we’re following or what’s happening, sometimes the style changes. For example, as I just mentioned, the sea’s perspective feels entirely different from everything else in this story. The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall is a young adult fantasy novel that is not to be missed. Both Florian and Evelyn have lived their lives by the rules, and whims, of others. Again, I don’t want to spoil too much here, but the whole idea of what the mermaids are, how they work, why they were created, and why the Imperials have such a vested interest in getting rid of them is brilliant. In particular, the reason the Imperials want them wiped out is such an incredible allegory for what colonial powers do to those they colonize. As someone whose family was subjected to the genocidal agendas of residential schools, it hits extremely close to home. A touch I loved that this author included was non-Imperial people taking on names to reflect those in power and try to better 'fit in,' much the same way non-European people take on European names to make things 'easier' for those who are their colonizers and just grease the wheels of social interactions.
