Buy this book from hive.co.uk to support The Reading Agency and local bookshops at no additional cost to you. The characters were confusing, who was related to whom. I didn't particularly like any of them, none of them stood out. All this, my love, darling etc became rather nauseous after a while. Nightingale hHuse, it was felt was meant to be another character in the story like Mandelery in Rebecca and the women’s obsession with it: Lyddie, Stella and Juliet was meant to convey that. The Garden Of Lost And Found is a multi-generational, family saga which has the Horner family’s enchanting family home, Nightingale House, firmly at its centre. The story seamlessly switches between historical events and those in the present gradually building a clearer picture of the events which lead artist Sir Edward Horner to burn his most famous painting, The Garden Of Lost And Found, before bringing it to a climatic end with a final twist.

I wasn't sure what kind of book I was reading most of the time - is this a post-modern take on young adult fantasy? Is this gritty urban drama with a twist of C.S. Lewis? Is this gay fiction for people who hate gay fiction? I felt like a sense of wonderment was implied throughout the book, but at the same time I never felt oohed or aahed. Mysterious overtones wafted through the book, but the big reveals always end up feeling more sobering than awe-inspiring. Nightingale House links the generations. It becomes a character in its own right. Harriet Evans painted its picture with her words so that I could ‘see’ the house. A major theme throughout the novel is that of the ideal family and the ideal home, as depicted in the painting. Do such things actually exist? Do we only appreciate them when they might be, or are, lost? How have the challenges and attitudes to family life changed over the past 100 years? All these prompted rich discussion at our meeting. This magical, historical adult contemporary tells the story of two different characters on two different timelines and their families. I felt absolutely captivated and thoroughly enjoyed reading this brilliant book! The main character is a mother and art expert called Juliet who's life turns upside down and has an unexpected life line from her ancestors. Harriet has written a brilliant story that links between the present day and the past of Juliet's family.

At university I read Classical Studies, which is a great way of finding out that the world doesn't change much and people make the same mistakes but it's interesting to look at why. I truly got a feeling of who the main characters in this book were, even if I couldn't relate to any of them. I'm always a fan of richly developed personalities in fiction, and in this regard the book did not disappoint. This sweeping tale is by turns painfully sad and heart-lifting, with characters that stay with you.’ Good Housekeeping
