The Eagle Has Landed introduces Liam Devlin, a fast-talking agent for the Irish Republican Army, who is featured in three of Higgins’ subsequent thrillers. Though nominally about espionage, as the story revolves around an imaginary plot by the Nazi military intelligence agency, the Abwehr, in 1943, the novel is more properly a thriller, action-filled virtually from the beginning to the end.

Patterson's early novels, using his own name (as "Harry Patterson") as well as the pseudonyms James Graham, Martin Fallon, and Hugh Marlowe, are thrillers that typically feature hardened, cynical heroes, ruthless villains, and dangerous locales. Patterson published thirty-five such novels (sometimes three or four a year) between 1959 and 1974, learning his craft. East Of Desolation (1968), A Game For Heroes (1970) and The Savage Day (1972) are notable among his early work for their vividly described settings ( Greenland, the Channel Islands, and Belfast, respectively) and offbeat plots. Devlin parachutes into Ireland before entering England via a ferry to Scotland in the guise of an army chaplain. Whilst Schellenberg recruits Asa Vaughan, a pilot in the fictional American Free Corps, to pilot Steiner's escape flight. Schellenberg then enlists the help of two fascists and ' sleeper agents', Sir Max Shaw and his sister Lavinia. Their home, Shaw Place, an isolated country house located near Romney Marsh, Kent is seen by Schellenberg as an ideal landing field for Vaughan. The village is the setting for the novel, which tells the story of a group of German soldiers who are stranded in the village during World War II. The villagers are initially hostile to the Germans, but they eventually come to accept them as part of the community. There is other good characterisation in Himmler’s portrayal as a cold, high official presiding from his office at Prinz Albrechtstrasse over the more human soldiers in the operation. So I didn't love this book. I thought it was okay. Sometimes when I dislike a book that the majority of my fellow readers rate highly, I will either be thinking to myself ‘what the hell were those people hopped up to rate this dung pile so highly and how can I score me some of that’ or I'll be thinking, ‘okay, I'm the dung pile and must have missed something or banged my head to hard as a child because I seem to be clearly mistaken on this one.’ Well in this case, I don’t think it's either (though my status as a dung pile is certainly open to daily re-interpretation). I completely understand how someone can love this book and at the same time am very comfortable with my “it was just okay” assessment. Involves one or more Allies in their Mission (Optionally, there is a romance sub-plot with one of the Allies). Second, the reader is being asked to accept a Nazi soldier and an IRA terrorist as sympathetic protagonists.Extended scene in which Radl arrives at Abwehr headquarters; he discusses his health with a German Army doctor, played by Ferdy Mayne. Higgins is especially skillful in building suspense and moving the action forward by dipping into the thoughts of dozens of individual characters. In the hands of a less accomplished writer, this story would be extremely hard to follow, because it shifts from one scene and one character to the next with great regularity; a reader would be likely to forget who is who and what’s really happening.
