The Australian band Augie March take their name from the title of this book. They are known for their descriptive, literary lyrical content.

All through the book, Augie is encouraged into education, but never quite seems to make it; he reads a great deal for himself and develops a philosophy of life. Something or somebody always tends to crop up, turning his path before Augie seriously considers returning to education. Augie works a series of odd jobs, ranging from thief to union organizer to dog groomer. He works with many different people along the way. William Einhorn Simon's highly desirable girlfriend Cissy Flexner arrives in Benton Harbor with Simon, where the pair meets up with Augie. Simon confides in Augie that he intends to marry the girl, but because he is unable to raise the proper funds, he loses Cissy to his cousin, Five Properties.
