About this deal

When a little boy stumbles across a special star, he puts it in a jar and takes it on adventures. Together with his big sister, he takes his special treasure with him everywhere – to the cinema, to the swimming pool and even to the toilet! Following the success of Pied Piper Theatre’s Burglar Billlast year, this new two hander for very young children follows a similar format. There is little dialogue in Hare and Tortoise, lots of physicality and gentle joking, a neat narrative shape and some catchy songs. And it all sits very happily in the Yvonne Arnaud’s child-friendly studio space. Whilst marvelling at the night sky one evening, he realises the star is not quite as happy as he and so sets out to return it to its rightful home. Ebony Feare is a deliciously charismatic tortoise, languorous with an impressive range of reptilian faces and stances and a resonant singing voice. Stefan Stuart’s ever impatient hare, more boyish than leporine, makes for an appropriately lively contrast despite his weaker singing voice.

Reward charts for autistic children can help them to understand how their behaviour can have positive consequences or help them achieve simple aims. This reward chart is easy to use at home and encourages positive behaviour from your child. Display the jar in a prominent position and cut out the stars. Each time your child does something really good, reward them with a star for the jar. The reward chart comes with coloured stars to use as they are and it also provides some blank stars for your child to colour in according to the reasons for receiving a star. Full of warmth, this is a lovely story of siblings, friendship and doing what's right that is perfect for sharing just before sleep but too enjoyable to be restricted to bedtime reading only', Jillrbennett, Red Reading Hub - An exceedingly enchanting story that encapsulates both the awe and wonder of the stars, the night sky and of the unique bond between siblings . . . Incandescently, radiantly, resplendently brilliant! It's a dazzling delight that will truly shine on your bookshelf', Mr E, The Reader Teacher - Perfect for sharing just before sleep but too enjoyable to be restricted to bedtime reading only’ – Red Reading Hub One that I will be highly recommending to teachers and schools to share. Several schools that I visit utilise a praise system whereby pupils place a star in the jar for demonstrating positive behaviour and so this would definitely enhance and complement that practice.

Sarah Massini's artwork glows with warmth and humour and perfectly captures the friendship between the two siblings in this warm-hearted bedtime book. Told from the perspective of the big sister, this is the perfect picture book for siblings to share and read together. The short text and warm tone is ideal for toddlers aged 2 years and up. Koop dit boek om voor te lezen aan je allerliefste of gewoon als lichtpuntje in donkere dagen voor jezelf. Catherine Chapman’s designs – flowers, snow, carrots, russet leaves, and more – underpin the seasonal progression, once Tortoise has emerged from hibernation and we await the famous race. If nothing else, [Justin Atkin] is persistent. How else do you explain a five-year quest to create sonoluminescence with simple tools? If you found our reward charts for autistic children helpful, you might find our other behaviour support resources useful. Topics covered include:Drawing has been a life-long habit for Sarah Massini which has seen her through careers in corporate design, children’s book design and now as an illustrator. She has illustrated several picture books including Books Always Everywhere, Zac and Zeb and the Make Believe Birthday Party and, most recently, a stunning edition of The Velveteen Rabbit. Sarah lives in Sussex with her husband, young son and her utterly mad terrier Tess, who keeps guard as she draws. What causes the glow? Good question. According to [Justin], we just don’t know for sure what causes it, although the leading theory is that cavitation of the bubble causes the trapped gas to compress and heat violently, turning into a brief bit of plasma. But there are problems with that theory, which is one of the reasons he wanted to show just how easy the process can be – now that he’s shaken out the bugs with five years of effort. It wasn’t easy getting the transducers attached and the driver circuit properly tuned, but with little more than a signal generator, an audio amp, and a spool of magnet wire, you too can make your own “star in a jar.”

You can't keep dogs, kittens, or wallets that you've found, and it turns out that you can't keep little stars, either. There's a lot going on in this deceptive book. We have a nice set of siblings, a responsible approach to things lost and things found, a clever practical/magical solution, and a mellow and appropriate close. It seems sort of odd to need to be celebrating siblings who cooperate, kids who know enough to do the right thing, and endings that are bittersweet happy, but there it is.
