Based on our own tests, the best coloured pencils we can recommend come from Castle Arts. With a soft-touch finish, these round-barrelled pencils offer first-rate blending and layering qualities. Over 180 years ago, Johann Sebastian Staedtler developed the coloured oil pastel pencil, the predecessor of the coloured pencil. The manufacturing process has not changed all that much over the years: individual colour pigments are still mixed with binding agents and pressed into the shape of a lead. The lead is encased in wood to protect it. These coloured pencils offer numerous advantages over the earlier pastel pencils: Coloured pencils typically last for at least two to five years, if used sparingly or not at all. Store them carefully in cool, dark place and they may last much longer. Conversely, the more that coloured pencils are exposed to heat or sunlight, the faster they will absorb moisture and dry out. This will make the lead brittle and difficult to use. How did we choose the best coloured pencils for this guide? The watercolour pencils have a watercolour lead, which offers a wide range of colouring possibilities, as the rich colours can be applied with water and a brush. From what I can ascertain, Staedtler have three brands of colored pencil, Staedtler Noris Club, Staedtler Noris and Staedtler Ergosoft. With the Ergosoft, the pencil we are reviewing here, the largest set is 24 and they also have a set of 12. I personally would love to see this particular range of pencil extended to 36 or 48, giving a little bit more choice to the younger artists using this pencil.

I can't comment on whether they break or not as I haven't put them through their paces in terms of travel... though they got to me through the post and none of them are broken. As the pencils get worn down and shorter, I wonder if they will rattle around in the compartment a bit. I hope then that the anti-break technology will be proven at this point! Thanks to its triangular shape, the pencil sits comfortably in the hand ensuring relaxed and easy colouring.
