For generations, the Skylanders worked with the Portal Masters in keeping peace and balance in their world, battling the forces of darkness, and protecting their signature position (the Core of Light, Cloudbreak Islands, etc). The Skylanders have an unbreakable bond with their Portal Masters. Though they are not servants, the Skylanders chose to serve their Portal Master and do so eagerly. They are also friends with the Fairies, particularly because fairies can turn treasure into upgrade magic that gives the Skylanders new powers and abilities, including fresh breath. The Warping Vortex path further upgrades Night Shift's teleportation ability, allowing him to, when fully upgraded, create a vortex that pulls in enemies. The Close to Doom upgrade allows this vortex to deal damage, although the damage is small. This path is primarily for crowd control, allowing the Skylander to pull together many enemies that would otherwise take too long to defeat one at a time, or to pull away enemies that are too dangerous to deal with at the moment. If Night Shift has the Batty Coach upgrade and falls during a Ring Out challenge, his health boost will appear on-screen although it will not revive him. Pokémon: Some Poison-type Pokemon have the Stench ability, which has a chance of making the opponent flinch in battle due to the bad smell. The smell also decreases the chance of encountering a wild Pokemon.

Some Skylanders introduced or mentioned in Skylanders Academy are currently not playable in the games. It is unknown if some of them are still on the team. As of Season 2, age has started catching up to many of the veteran Skylanders, many who have already retired or do so during the show's events. In "Babyfier", baby Jumba and baby Pleakley go to a coffee shop and find there's too many people in it. Pleakley soils himself and the resulting stench causes everyone to flee.
