The first novel was published in April 2007. The following novels were released each year afterward, with the exception of the fourth and fifth novels, Dark Days and Mortal Coil, which were both released in 2010. Landy was initially contracted to write three books, with any further books depending on how well the first trilogy sold. The success of the first novels ensured that the deal was extended first to six books and in 2011, HarperCollins signed the deal for the third and final trilogy. [1] The final book in the first series was published in August 2014. The new books in the second series began to be published annually in June 2017.

Later Solomon Wreath approaches Valkyrie who angrily tells him that Guild has given all the credit of the victory to Mr Bliss. Wreath tells Valkyrie that she can still save Skulduggery by using his original skull as an Isthmus anchor. With new hope, she is also told she is a natural at Necromancy, seeing how skilfully she was able to wield Wreath's cane. Wreath offers to train her, as she will need more power to get through her new mission. Skulduggery Pleasant is an extremely powerful sorcerer: despite being an Elemental, he is shown to be able to adapt to other magical disciplines as well and has advanced Elemental magic to an extent that is only exceeded by Mevolent. He is also an excellent detective and possesses a variety of other skills: A spin-off novel featuring Tanith Low taking place between the seventh and eighth books was released on 28 March 2013 in the U.K & Ireland and 1 April in other countries. The cover and title ( Tanith Low in... The Maleficent Seven: From the World of Skulduggery Pleasant) were released on 7 December 2012 after several delays, with Landy stating it to be his favourite book cover ever. At the Requiem Ball, Skulduggery introduced Valkyrie to dignitaries such as Dexter Vex and Quintin Strom. However, Melancholia St Clair was revealed to be alive and the battled in the tunnels under the mansion. Skulduggery reforms into Lord Vile and battles Melancholia. Defeated, she and Valkyrie attempted to flee. Even the White Cleaver was ripped apart by Vile's magic.When Valkyrie was to reach full maturity, usually at the age of 19 or 20, she would have had to choose her magical discipline before she experiences The Surge. After this choice, she would lose the ability to use other types of magic, so if she had chosen Necromancy she would have lost her Elemental powers and vice-versa. Derek Landy confirmed that she "can't have both." After obtaining the Scepter, Serpine created an immortal fighter called the White Cleaver. During a fight with the White Cleaver, Ghastly used magic to petrify himself to avoid being killed. Serpine then invaded the Sanctuary and killed two Elders with the help of the other traitorous Elder. He tried to use the Book of Names to control the World but all three Elders' consent was needed to read from it. Skulduggery continues into the Caves, soon coming across Serpine, having just found the Sceptre, with a group of Hollow Men. The Sceptre starts to ring as he approaches and fights Serpine. He sets Serpine on fire and batters him, but his injuries heal themselves in seconds. Valkyrie runs out of the shadows and rams into Serpine to stop him killing Skulduggery with the Sceptre. They are forced to flee, chased by Serpine and his Hollow Men. When they are outside Gordon’s house, Tanith helps fight off the Hollow Men. Serpine destroys the Canary Car using the Sceptre. A car pulls up, with China and her assistant in the front seat, and Tanith, Valkyrie and Skulduggery jump in as the car speeds away.

Five years after Devastation Day, Skulduggery attempts to convince Valkyrie to join him again for a mission. Skulduggery now works for the Arbiter Corps, an international Marshal Service-like organisation, after quitting as City Guard Commander of Roarhaven, due to a disagreement with Supreme Mage China Sorrows. During the investigation, Skulduggery is 'corrupted' by Azzedine Smoke, which makes him want to kill Valkyrie and join the anti-Sanctuary to resurrect Abyssinia. Skulduggery is able to overcome Smoke's influence after some time, showing the incomparable bond he shares with Valkyrie. Skulduggery and Valkyrie, along with many others attend the meeting at the Great Chamber to elect a new Council of Elders. Corrival Deuce reluctantly accepts to be the Grand Mage, and he nominated Erskine Ravel, an old friend of Skulduggery, and Skulduggery as Elders. Skulduggery doesn't want to be an Elder. Skulduggery and Valkyrie visit China because Skulduggery's façade has been giving him problems. There, they discuss Tesseract and his possible hirers. Later Skulduggery and Valkyrie go to Ghastly's shops, where Ravel and Tanith agree to help interrogate Marr. Valkyrie says that she has to go, and Skulduggery wonders where she is. Valkyrie visits a Banshee so she can seal her True Name, Darquesse.Valkyrie and Skulduggery meet Mr. Bliss, who has agreed to help them get the Sceptre from the caves, at a Martello tower on the cliffs of Haggard. They show him the brooch, and he pushes Skulduggery off the cliff. When in grave danger - such as being on the brink of death, Valkyrie subconsciously allowed Darquesse to take over her mind and body. As Darquesse, Valkyrie could wield a unique type of magic, possibly Ancient or Faceless Ones' magic, which granted her a huge amount of strength, allowing her to break boulders, crush skulls, and punch through bones with ease. It also gave her the ability to fly, the ability to see and manipulate someone's consciousness. Darquesse can also dull pain and has the ability to heal even her brain and organs, making her practically invincible. Darquesse can survive injuries that would easily kill a normal mage, even one as powerful as Skulduggery. Darquesse can even withstand having her head ripped off, though she admitted there was a strong chance she'd have died had she not magically repaired herself within seven seconds. Complete destruction of the brain would kill her - however, this is almost impossible do due to her ability to heal any and all wounds magically. Darquesse has been shown to be capable of disintegrating regular humans, turning them to ash with a mere gesture. In addition, Valkyrie's normal skills, such as Necromancy and Elemental Magic are increased vastly, superior to any average sorcerer. In Death Bringer, she is shown to be capable of fighting on par with Lord Vile; however, it is shown that her power has grown greatly, as she defeats Lord Vile with moderate difficulty, and even later states that she has surpassed him. [2] She is also shown to have the ability to see Magic, sensing its presence and nature in other beings. She can understand different people's abilities, how strong they are, and how they will use it. She can also manifest her magic in the form of telekinesis, such as using it to break Kitana Kellaway's leg and moving her body towards her decapitated head. Skulduggery instead is convinced to join the fight against Darquesse, Scapegrace and Thrasher taking his place. Skulduggery becomes Lord Vile and with Melancholia, almost take down Darquesse. Later, Darquesse ended up destroying the world, Skulduggery in it, but it was just an illusion.

Skulduggery pulls into a fast-food place and reveals that Ghastly finished making Stephanie’s protective clothing, and gives it to her to try on in the bathrooms. They then head to the Waxworks Museum, which the Irish Sanctuary is hidden under, and where she sees Cleavers for the first time. The Administrator shows them the Book of Names in the Repository, which contains the Given, Taken and True names of every person. The Book cannot be destroyed so the Elders combined their powers to protect it. Called the Will of the Elders, this spell makes someone want the Book less the closer they are to it. They are then taken to meet the Elders: Eachan Meritorious, Morwenna Crow and Sagacoius Tome, who try to deter Stephanie from involving herself in the world of magic, and asks Skulduggery about his recent claims of threats to the truce. When they learn he believes Serpine is after the Sceptre, they dismiss it as nonsense and leave. Outside the Waxworks Museum Skulduggery and Stephanie meet Mr. Bliss, who tells them about the deaths of Clement Gale and Alexander Slake and states that the Sceptre of the Ancients was recently uncovered during an archaeological dig and bought by Gordon. He knows Serpine is after the Sceptre and says that the Elders underestimate Serpine too much to act against him. When his wife continued to talk of watching Skulduggery die, the child ran over. Skulduggery spoke to his wife but was looking down directly at his child. There is no expense spared by Landy in this book and I would have to say that everyone who could be bothered to read it, would definitely be drawn into it and certainly enjoy it. (...) [45] After Valkyrie has spent nine months obsessively looking for Skulduggery's skull, a vampire called Caelan manages to set up a meeting for her with a man called Thames Chabon, who apparently has the skull. It is revealed that Wreath has indeed been teaching her Necromancy during her search for the skull, and she has placed her power into a ring.Set between Mortal Coil and Death Bringer, the novella Apocalypse Kings was published in February 2021. Although Valkyrie had now been Darquesse for longer than ever, Skulduggery believes that she can still be saved. He goes to Valkyrie's reflection Stephanie for help, since she is in possession of The Sceptre of the Ancients. She accepts, on the terms that they are to kill Darquesse if they get the chance. After a hesitation, Skulduggery agrees. Darquesse and Tanith free one of the Remnants after killing off the sorcerer and Cleavers guarding it and use the sorcerer, Maksy, as a host for the freed Remnant. Tanith seems uncertain about freeing the remainder but still complies with Darquesse.
