I needed to fill out the bottom of the beanstalk so I decided not to be lazy (this was a new day) and make a batch of Rice Krispy treats. I wrapped the treats around the plastic wrap covered pipe and shaped it into the width I wanted. The final aftermath, and proof that the kids enjoyed eating it as much as they enjoyed touching it. In Shrek 2, when Puss is fighting with Shrek, he sneaks into Shrek's clothing, and he burst through the ogre's shirt. This is a visual reference to the chest bursting scene in the sci-fi/horror film Alien. I immediately thought of the scene in the movie when the beanstalk first shoots up into the sky and the characters get swept into the clouds. I decided to make a cloud cake with the beanstalk coming up through it and the characters sitting on the cloud. At first I was just going to have the cloud on a cake board but then I decided that it would be way more exciting if the cloud were actually floating in the sky. So I talked through my idea with my structural designer (a.k.a. my husband) and he helped me figure out the best way to support it. The final result was a 3 foot cake that looked more like a sculpture than a cake. My niece loved it and it was definitely the talk of the party. A few days after saving San Ricardo, Puss is riding his horse in the desert until he gets captured by Italian guards. He gets hired by the Princess to stop a criminal called the Whisperer and to do that she asks him to bring his three minions, called Three Diablos with him as they know where he is. When he discovers that they are three cute innocent kittens, Puss is surprised that they're so infamous minions of The Whisperer but later he finds out about their devilish nature when they turn on him as they're walking in the desert and bury him alive.In the fourth film, Puss is seen as a regular guest at Shrek's home, eating dinner with Shrek's family and telling the children of the tale of how Shrek met Fiona. He is not properly seen again until Shrek has entered the alternate reality made by Rumpelstiltskin. Here, he has retired from swordsmanship and has become obese and shiftless, and Fiona's pet as well. He befriends Shrek when he realizes there was a spark of romantic interest between Shrek and Fiona. Puss takes part in the ambush on Rumpelstiltskin's ogre hunt, but Fiona's army of ogres are captured by the Pied Piper. Puss and Donkey rescue Shrek and Fiona from the Piper, but Fiona leaves in anger when she thought Puss told Shrek everything about her. Puss befriended a young Humpty Alexander Dumpty, who gave him his name Puss, and they became brothers in heart with a dream: To find the Magic Beans so they may find the Giant's Castle and get the Golden Eggs of the Golden Goose, setting themselves up for life. Throughout their childhood, Puss and Humpty got in and out of trouble, stealing various beans in their search for the magic beans until one day, Puss saved the mother of the Captain of the Guard (Comandante) from a bull, and was regarded as a hero when Imelda gave him a pair of boots to wear with pride.

I covered the board with a vinyl covering instead of fondant. That made it easier to handle while transporting and was more cost effective, but did cause a little wrinkling. Expert Thief and Hunter: Puss is known to be a master of thievery since he is extremely skilled in theft. Like all cats, Puss is also a master of hunting.Because his upper body and head is all cake, he needed a strong support, so his legs and tail were modeled with rice krispies. I used an antiquing type painting effect to give him an illustrative look and finished him off with kinky curled whiskers, inspired by Tim Burton drawings.

While he walks inside the cave, Puss meets all his previous eight lives and, after a brief moment of nostalgia, realizes how much wrong he was about wanting to be a loner and prepares to leave but he meets the Big Wolf once again, who reveals he's not a bounty hunter but Death in person and, finding the idea of cats having nine lives absurd and being mad that he wasted his eight lives without any regards, he wants to take his last life to "make a favor to both of them". Puss runs away and manages to escape from the crystal cave, being spotted by Kitty and Perrò, who believe he's leaving them behind. With only one life left, Puss is forced to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: Kitty Softpaws. Aside from being a protective and honorable fighter, Puss is a "ladies' cat" as well. Puss likes to tell stories, sing and dance. He is always on the lookout for an adventure and will do anything to protect his friends.

Ingredients

In my last blog entry I showed you my latest creation, the Puss In Boots floating cloud cake that I made for my niece’s 5th birthday. The two questions I get asked the most when I make a 3D cake like that are, “Is that edible?” and “How did you make that?” In this entry I hope to answer those questions for you and inspire you to make your own gravity-defying cake creation. Expert Dancer: Puss is shown to be an expert at dancing, as shown when he was challenged by Kitty Softpaws to a dance fight. Puss does not appear in the first film or 4D ride for obvious reasons, though he does make a non-speaking cameo in the musical.
