Metalious was born Grace de Repentigny on Sept. 8, 1924, to poor Franco-American parents in Manchester, N.H. Her father, a merchant seaman, left the family when she was 10.When Selena turns 14 years old, Lucas begins to abuse her, impregnating her and leaving local doctor Matthew Swain in a troublesome situation in which he decides to perform an abortion. The doctor makes Lucas leave town, and after she discovers this, Nellie commits suicide by hanging. Unknown to most readers, behind the fictional story about the lives and scandals of residents of a small New England town Metalious called Peyton Place, lay a dark secret based on fact. The story was, in part, inspired by a true life crime known in the press as “The Sheep Pen Murder,” which took place in Gilmanton, New Hampshire in the late 1940s. After Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Lols and Harold Robbins’ The Carpetshaggers I thought well, why not, let’s do it : Peyton Place, the 1956 trash classic to complete the trilogy. At the age of eighteen she married George Metalious (1925-2015) who came from a Greek family. The couple had three children. After World War II army service, George became a teacher, but Grace wasn’t the perfect faculty wife and displayed rebellious tendencies. Not your ideal mom In spite of the longstanding success of the television version of Peyton Place, which featured guest stars like Gena Rowlands and is thought to have launched the careers of the likes of Mia Farrow and Ryan O’Neal, Metalious was sheepish about the association of the Peyton Place brand with tawdriness. According to Callahan, she threw her drink in the face of the show’s screenwriter when he asked if it was autobiographical. Downward Spiral

The author lives with her husband and three kids in a little new England town. She looks like any other housewife and blue jeans and a ponytail. But her book about a little New England town has some of the most explicit sex scenes since Memoirs of Hecate County, the Edmund Wilson book that was banned 10 years ago. Martin encouraged Metalious to spend frivolously, reminding her that she was famous after all. As Callahan writes, she spent liberally on a “new Cadillac, new clothes, dinners at ‘21,’ cases of champagne, and chartered flights to the Caribbean. Grace poured thousands of dollars into renovating the country house she’d bought on Meadow Pond Road, which had once been owned by a Chicago gangster.” Her relationship with Martin was often hostile, occasionally even violent, and lubricated by appalling quantities of alcohol. The couple were married in 1958, but divorced two years later. A bland, soapy TV series (starring Mia Farrow and Ryan O’Neal) in the early 1960s altered the premise to the point where it obliterated whatever literary merit the book possessed.
