About this deal

I've been looking for about 3 hours now and there's so much contrasting information. Does anyone know definitively what the screw size is for MSI? M3X3 screw(most computers include these. These secure the Y1WJX M.2 drive carrier, or a 2.5" drive into 745TM) This is actually quite complicated, as was pointed out by Paul, one of our readers! Here is a more concise explanation of the relationship between gauge (imperial), diameter (metric in mm) and Head size. Just make sure you don’t destroy anything by trying to jam in a screw that’s way too big. Tape the M.2 Drive Down Get some actual M.2 screws and do it right. But in the meantime… Look for Old Small Screws in Your Home

However, with the right research and understanding, installing an m 2 ssd with the correct screws should be a straightforward process. Examine the existing screw (if applicable): If you are replacing a missing or damaged screw, examine the existing screws used for securing other components in your system. Compare the size and thread type of these screws to determine if they are suitable for the M.2 SSD installation. Keep in mind that while they may look similar, they might not be the ideal size or type for the SSD. The gauge (imperial) is approximately the head’s size in millimeters (metric). However, there is no correlation or scientific explanation here. Metric System So you don’t need to screw them in, but it’s such a simple and easy safety measure, there’s no point not doing it.

Types of screws for M.2 SSDs

This depends on the manufacturer you buy from. Some brands might provide screws to fit the drive into its slow. Gigabyte usually has the screws already screwed on the motherboard, while others like Dell (such as with the Inspiron 3670) don’t include the screw or even the post into which the screw fits. It only has a hole for the screw needed to install the drive. Remember to start by screwing in the standoff screws into the motherboard, through the tiny holes on the board. After, you can place the m 2 ssd firmly on the standoff screws and screw it in using the retaining screws. A metric ISO screw thread is designated by the letter M followed by the value of the nominal diameter D (the maximum thread diameter) and the pitch P, both expressed in millimetres and separated by a dash or sometimes the multiplication sign, × (e.g. M8-1.25 or M8×1.25). If the pitch is the normally used "coarse" pitch listed in ISO 261 or ISO 262, it can be omitted (e.g. M8). [4] :17 Phillips and slotted drives are the two main types. Some are a combination that works for either type. Power off and ground yourself: Before working inside your computer, ensure that it is powered off and disconnected from any power source. To prevent any static discharge that could damage your components, ground yourself by touching a metal object or wearing an anti-static wristband.

Basic profile [ edit ] Basic profile of all ISO metric screw threads, where the male part has the external thread If you can’t find a dedicated M2 screw, you can try out other screws with a similar size like the screws present on a pencil sharpener. Slotted screws are fast becoming history and cross head screws are now the fashion but it must be remembered that a cross head screw can either be a Philips screw (top image below)or a pozidrive/supadrive screw (bottom image below). They both require a different type of driver which can be found below. If you are not confident in performing the installation process, it’s always a good idea to seek help from a professional.

More about Screws

The sheet metal screws are self-tapping, meaning they do not need pre-drilled holes into the source before inserting them. They are best for application in heavy gauge sheet metal. 3. Phillips Head Screw The design principles of ISO general-purpose metric screw threads ("M" series threads) are defined in international standard ISO 68-1. [2] Each thread is characterized by its major diameter, D ( D maj in the diagram), and its pitch, P. ISO metric threads consist of a symmetric V-shaped thread. In the plane of the thread axis, the flanks of the V have an angle of 60° to each other. The thread depth is 0.54125 × pitch. The outermost 1⁄ 8 and the innermost 1⁄ 4 of the height H of the V-shape are cut off from the profile. Some people have also been successful in using screws from their old laptops, like the front screw present on the laptop’s chassis. It might be a little long for some motherboards, but if you’re handy enough, you can file it down using a kitchen sharpening stone. Some people even found the screw on a regular pencil sharpener to be the right fit. Lastly, count the threads in one inch to get the thread spacing value. To get an accurate measurement, lay the screw next to a measuring tape or ruler and count the number of threads. The thread count in the imperial system ranges from 35 to 40 threads per inch. Thread pitch and thread spacing mean the same thing, so don’t get those two confused. Buying Guide

If you can’t find the M2 screw that came with your SSD, you can try one of these three options. Just make sure you don’t force the screw in its place if it doesn’t fit correctly. These screws are typically sturdier and stronger than wooden screws because they are made of steel. Steel is the most common material used for the manufacture of screws. The metric and imperial system uses the diameter sizes measured in millimeters instead of a gauge table. Coincidentally, the gauge is approximately the size of the screw head in millimeters. The "M" designation for metric screws indicates the nominal outer diameter of the screw thread, in millimetres. This is also referred to as the "major" diameter in the information below. It indicates the diameter of smooth-walled hole that a male thread (e.g. on a bolt) will pass through easily to connect to an internally threaded component (e.g. a nut) on the other side. That is, an M6 screw has a nominal outer diameter of 6 millimetres and will therefore be a well-located, co-axial fit in a hole drilled to 6mm diameter. The size of machine screws is measured by numbers ranging from 0 to 14, with larger numbers indicating a bigger screw. Common threads per inch sizes are 4, 4-1/2, 5, 5-1/2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 48, 56, 72, 80.What is the significance of knowing these things if you can walk into the hardware store and ask the sales clerk for assistance? Well, there is not always someone available to assist you. Sometimes, they do not know much about it. You may get false or inaccurate information. When it comes to things as intricate as sizes, knowing the bare minimum helps. It can save you from buying the wrong type, leading to unnecessary expenses and wasted time and effort. It can even cause a failed project.
