About this deal

A prequel novel, titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, about the early days of the Hunger Games, featuring a young Coriolanus Snow as the protagonist, was released on May 19, 2020. [8] The prequel has been sold by Stimola Literary Studio into 35 territories to date. [9] Setting After all, Mayor Undersee is himself a part of the enigmatic President Snow and the Capitol’s oppressive regime, though a small part of it at that. Madge and her father enjoy privileges unknown to Katniss and her family, as well as the larger populous of District 12. In The Hunger Games film adaptation, one of these poorer District 12 citizens is seen giving Katniss her emblematic pin in lieu of Madge. Why make this change? Why would Suzanne Collins, author of the book series, opt for Madge to be the giver of this gift instead? Coriolanus Snow — One of the 24 mentors assigned by the "Academy" for the 10th Hunger Games. His family was once one of power in the Capitol, but has since fallen on hard times. He assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute from District 12. He becomes embroiled in the still ongoing conflict between the Capitol and rebels and must face matters of love, chaos, contract and control. Collins says she drew inspiration for the series from both classical and contemporary sources. Her main classical source of inspiration is the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, in which, as a punishment for past crimes, Minos forces Athens to sacrifice seven youths and seven maidens to the Minotaur, which kills them in a vast labyrinth. Collins says that even as a child, she was stunned by the idea since "it was just so cruel" to force Athens to sacrifice its own children. Primrose Everdeen — Katniss' little sister, who helps keep Katniss sane when Peeta wasn't there. Prim worked as a healer in District 13 and planned on becoming a doctor, but died during a bombing by Coin's soldiers when a hovercraft dropped parachute bombs on a large group of Capitol children. When she rushed in with medics, she was killed by the second explosion. It was thought that the bomb that killed her could have been made by Gale.

Lucy Gray Baird — The mentee of Coriolanus Snow. The female tribute from District 12. She is talented singer and part of a group known as the Covey. She makes a dramatic entrance into the Hunger Games and Coriolanus Snow finds himself falling head over heels for her. Ladies first!" She calls out the name of a girl who's from the Seam, you can tell by the look of her, and then I hear the name "Maysilee Donner." Major themes of the novels include distrust of authority (of adults and the government), class discrimination and caste, resistance, the ethics of entertainment, and most notably, the origins and effects of war. [20] Social inequality, unaccountable governance and violence against children have also been suggested as prominent themes. "In the world of the 'Hunger Games', the Capitol lives a life of extravagant wealth and consumption. Meanwhile, out in the 'districts', millions of people work dangerous jobs with low pay. As the Capitol wallows in excess, the districts can barely afford to feed their children." [21] Author Suzanne Collins also mentions the themes of " just war", gladiatorial combat and hunger. [22] War as a result of climate disaster, and the power and illusions of television have also been cited as themes. [23] Others have mentioned revolution and rebellion as themes. "Although it’s... aimed at young adults, it presents potentially quite subversive ideas of mass revolution, economic sabotage and the populist fight against oligarchy." [24] Reception Critical reception The three-finger gesture used in the books to express unity with the rebellion has been used in real-life protests in Thailand (2014, 2020) and Myanmar (2021). It came from her aunt who died in the Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games takes place in the ruins of North America: a country called Panem, consisting of the Capitol and 13 subservient districts. During the yearly "Reaping" of tributes for the gladiator-like Hunger Games, Katniss' younger sister, Primrose (Prim) is selected as District 12's female tribute. Katniss volunteers to take Prim's place. Because getting chosen at the reaping is supposed to be an honor, the district's Hunger Games escort Effie Trinket asks for a round of applause for Katniss, but everyone remains silent. Instead, everyone in the crowd press their three middle fingers of their left hands against their mouths and hold it out to her as a salute. Katniss describes this as an ancient sign for saying "admiration", "goodbye to someone you love", and "respect". Johanna Mason — The female tribute from District 7. She won an earlier Hunger Games by pretending she was a weakling until there were only a handful of tributes left, then showing that she could kill viciously. Katniss remembers watching these Games herself, so Johanna is fairly young. Johanna was captured by the Capitol at the end, along with Peeta and Enobaria.

He does not seem to value human life as much as she does. He feels no sympathy for the enemies to the rebellion, and he feels fine with torture and murder, even of innocent civilians, to advance the rebellion. She struggles to reconcile this with the fact that she still cares for Gale.
