There has been some conversation about the potential dangers of sulfates, with people suggesting they dry hair and skin out. We use sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, to get the right balance of both cleansing and mildness. There are a number of sulfate surfactants commonly used in shampoos, but four of the most popular are: Dr. Matthew Zirwas, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Bexley Dermatologyin Bexley, Ohio, recommended trying a shampoo for, “at least a month because if your old shampoo had ingredients that were causing a dandruff-like rash of their own, it will take 4-8 weeks for that ingredient to work its way out of your body after you start the new stuff.” All shampoos use some form of surfactant to capture oil and dirt and clean it off your hair. Surfactants are also responsible for the creamy lather you get when you shampoo your hair. Dimethicone – microscopic droplets of dimethicone in the shampoo are released onto each hair fiber during rinsing. When hair is dry, these droplets smooth and protect the hair cuticle, keeping hair soft and shiny.
