About this deal

This is one of the cheapest fire pits on our list but it’s sturdy, well made and more versatile than many of the other models. We like the addition of the mesh lid and that the stone textured surround is large enough to place a drink or plate on. In addition, the Solo Stove Bonfire kit also includes a high-quality steel stand so that you can use it on most surfaces. Rounded edges prevent scratching of surfaces. Multiple air vents prevent heat damage through constant cooling airflow. Made of iron, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be used as a permanent or portable pit. To keep yours in good condition, you should rub it with oil after every other use. If you’re on the hunt for a completely smokeless tabletop fire pit that can be easily moved around and used indoors too, this Bio ethanol model is an excellent buy.

The patented double wall with top vents creates the world's most unique double burn and nearly smokeless fire. As a result, the secondary combustion produces a fire ring with mesmerising flames burning away most smoke. Cast iron and stainless steel are excellent, durable options for wood-burning fire pits. If you’re tempted to build your own sunken or free-standing fire pit, it’s best to construct it from stone or metal. You can even turn old washing machine drums into effective fire pits! The steel will oxidise naturally over time, so it shouldn't need much maintenance. Where to buy a fire pit It may not push out quite the same levels of heat that our regular and much bigger, single skin, fire pit does, but I’ve read that’s the payoff when considering any low smoke firepit. The double-cavity required to achieve those mesmerising rolling flames, and the smoke reduction, inadvertently acts as heat insulation. This really depends on your needs, if you want a fire pit that can be regularly moved, is low maintenance and clean, we’d recommend a gas fire pit. If you don’t mind cleaning up ash and the smoky aroma, a wood-burning fire pit is hard to beat.Wood-burning fire pits will burn best with seasoned hardwoods like ash and beech. These woods will burn for the longest time.

The use of charcoal, along with the optional Outpost Grill attachment, makes the Y-series a competent barbecue. You can cook over wood as well, and the height of the grill surface is adjustable so you can keep clear of the flames. We appreciated the adjustable legs which raised the top of the fire pit up to 20 inches and made the grill surface easier to reach. Heat radiates well from the Y-Series when loaded up with logs. The 15-inch body height allowed for more heat to be felt on our lower extremities. Although we did choose two favorites, in our testing nearly all of the smokeless-pit designs worked more or less the same. They all have two walls (kind of like an insulated thermos bottle), and they leverage the difference in air temperature between those walls to create extra airflow through holes in the walls of the fire pit. That extra oxygen creates a secondary combustion of the fire’s off-gassing, molecules that usually create smoke if they aren’t burned. What distinguishes fire pits from one another is largely their looks, how easy they are to clean, and, to some extent, the available accessories. The most striking detail of the X Series 24 is its corten finish—it’s designed to oxidize, creating a natural finish that protects the steel rather than continuing to degrade it. It weighs more than twice as much as most of the other models we tested, which means it’s not exactly portable—but it’s built to last. If you want to enjoy your fire pit in comfort, a patio set with a fire pit table is a great option. You can choose from a range of different seating options (from 5 to 9 seats) and the set comes with a large, glass-topped table with an integral fire pit that’s protected with a glass windshield.A patio heater won’t give the same experience as a fire pit or a chiminea, though, and you won’t be able to cook on it, either. If you want something to keep you warm while relaxing in your garden but don’t fancy a fire pit, here are some other outdoor heating options to try. Chimineas Fire pits and chimineas aren’t great either. In fact, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), while UK air quality has improved significantly over the past few decades, the burning of solid fuels (such as coal and wood) in our homes is the largest contributor of harmful particulate-matter (PM) emissions. Yes, a Solo Stove can be used under a covered patio or porch, but it’s important to ensure proper ventilation to prevent the buildup of smoke and carbon monoxide. But if you find that the accompanying smoke dampens that pleasure, or if your neighbors prefer to keep their bedroom windows open to catch the cool air, you might consider using a so-called smokeless fire pit, which eliminates some (but not all) of your fire’s smoke and most of the ash.
