About this deal

There are two types of Dendrobiums; those that produce flowers along the shaft in between the leaves ( N obile), and others that produce a spike at the top ( Phalaenopsis). The flowers can last up to two months and can bloom at any time, most commonly during late winter. The best way to tempt any Orchid into flowering is by reducing the temperature in the winter; have a read of the 'Dormancy Period & Annual Flowers' above for more information on this... Dilute this according to the plant food manufacturer’s instructions, to avoid burning your orchid’s roots. They can also be a mix of two or more colours – D. nobile has white, rose pink or purple flowers with a contrasting lip, and can produce up to 50 blooms per stem. Habitat & Growing Conditions First and foremost, it’s important to properly identify the type of pest you’re dealing with on your orchids. The most common culprits include spider mites, scales, mealybugs and thrips.

Lastly, keep an eye out for any signs of trouble early on so you can nip the problem in the bud before it gets worse. Regular inspection combined with these natural remedies will help keep your garden healthy all year round without causing harm to either yourself or nature’s creatures! 4. Chemical-based pest control methods and their effectiveness on OrchidsIn addition, old canes have a chance of flowering as well as producing some tiny offsets known as Keikis. Note that these offsets are very useful as they can be saved for propagation purposes. Place both new plants in a properly sized pot, with orchid potting medium. And situate it so that the plant base is just below the potting mixture (about ½ an inch). Wait a week before watering it thoroughly. Though it is not truly propagation, old canes might also produce keikis. These tiny orchids can be separated from the can and planted on their own. Be sure to wait until their roots develop before doing so. Dendrobium phalaenopsis are regarded as beginner orchids since they are fairly easy to maintain healthy during the year. There are thousands of Dendrobium Orchid Varieties. Below are just a couple of unique varieties for you to consider.

The Dendrobium genus encompasses many species, each with unique care requirements. However, most dendrobiums generally thrive in warm conditions (60-85°F) during the growing season. A winter rest period with lower temperatures and reduced watering for three to four weeks can be effective to encourage your dendrobium to rebloom. While some dendrobium species may only rebloom once, others could rebloom several times annually. These orchids include about 60 species with large, leathery leaves borne at the top of the pseudobulbs, and erect inflorescences with usually yellow-green flowers. They include species such as Den. atroviolaceum, Den. macrophyllum and Den. spectabile. Summer: give warmth (60 to 90 F), medium light, medium quantities of water, and fertilizer. Winter: keep cool (50 F nights), medium light, just enough water to keep pseudobulbs from shriveling, no fertilizer. To encourage your Dendrobium orchids to bloom, you should feed them a specialised orchid fertiliser with every second watering.

When they’re not happy, they soon let you know. The plant becomes weak, leaves can turn yellow, leaf tips can go brown and soon the plant becomes susceptible to pests such as mealy bugs.

Basal Offset Division (Easy) - It's best to divide between spring and summer with plantlets that are at least a third of the size of the mother plant with several developed roots. Take the plant out of its pot and place your hand in between the two plants; soil may have to be removed to get a better grip. While placing your hand as close to the nodal junction, gently push the pup downwards, while supporting the mother plant - you should hear a snap. Cautiously separate both the mother plant and pup's roots systems, keeping great empathise in keeping the roots intact and undamaged. Place the new plantlet in Orchid Bark, much similar to the original soil, and maintain the same care routines. Don't use a pot that is too big as a ratio of roots-soil that much leans towards the latter will cause root rot. Also, when you come across tiny yellow to brown or greyish bugs around one to two millimeters long, start taking action against thrips. These bugs can multiply within a few days as they lay and hatch eggs on the leaves. As an experienced gardener, dealing with stubborn or persistent infestations is something I have faced many times. It can be frustrating to watch as pests and diseases slowly take over your garden, but there are ways to overcome these challenges. As an experienced gardener, I’ve encountered my fair share of pests in the garden over the years. However, one pest that can be particularly challenging to deal with is those found on Dendrobium Orchids. The Dendrobium genus includes over 900 different species of orchids, in a dizzying array of shapes, colours and sizes. However, most commercially available dendrobium orchids have been bred from just two species, Dendrobium nobile and Dendrobium phalaenopsis. These two species come from very different climates – Dendrobium nobile is native to cool parts of China, India and the Himalayas. In contrast, Dendrobium phalaenopsis comes from warmer areas in south-east Asia and Australia. (Don’t be misled by the name – these are not the same as Phalaenopsis orchids, which are a separate genus all of their own.)
