About this deal

Crossing the River: Seven Stories That Saved My Life" is a sort of memoir in the form of a collection of essays. If you are looking for something hopeful and uplifting, this is not the memoir for you. If you are looking for something heavy and oppressive, this is the memoir for you. And is that because, in a way, it's almost like a survival guide. Carol Smith lays out the tools she discovered amidst all the pain and grief, the tools that helped her get from one day to the next.

Maybe it is because we are just closing out Pandemic of 2020, but I could not find that same sense of hope or optimism. Smith writes with a beautiful honesty and vulnerability. Her connection with the seven persons in these stories is real and compassionate. But, honestly the raw pain felt because of her excellent writing was too much for me. I had a hard time finishing it. Maybe if I had read it at any other time, I would have found it optimistic and uplifting but right now I found it more depressing that encouraging.Anthony N. Penna (2010). The Human Footprint: A Global Environmental History. John Wiley & Sons. p.285. ISBN 978-1-4051-8772-5. And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.

The phrase " crossing the Rubicon" is an idiom that means "passing a point of no return". [1] Its meaning comes from allusion to the crossing of the river Rubicon by Julius Caesar in early January 49BC. The exact date is unknown. [2] Scholars usually place it on the night of 10 and 11 January because of the speeds at which messengers could travel at that time. [3] It is often asserted that Caesar's crossing of the river precipitated Caesar's civil war; [4] however, Caesar's forces had already crossed into Italy and occupied Ariminum the previous day. [5] These are the times that try men's souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)

How to play the 'Cross the River' game?

I shoot for about 5-7 kids on each team, but you can modify and adjust for different situations. The setup below is for one class, for double classes I would simply double the equipment. To start the game, I give my K-2 students 1 more dot than the members of their team, with 3-5th they get the same number of dots as team members. In Crossing the River, Smith recounts how she faced down her crippling loss through reporting a series of profiles of people coping with their own intense challenges, whether a freak accident, a debilitating injury, or a terrifying diagnosis. Smith deftly mixes the stories of these individuals and their families with her own account of how they helped her heal. General John Shalikashvili, once the most powerful member of the American military, taught Carol how to face fear with discipline and endurance. Seth, a young boy with a rare and incurable illness, shed light on the totality of her son's experiences, and in turn helps readers see that the value of a life is not measured in days. Phillips, Caryl. “Crossing the River: Caryl Phillips talks to Maya Jaggi.” Wasafiri 20 (Autumn 1994): 25-9.

As with any memory, I feel weird rating this book, because it feels like I am criticising her path through grief, and there's no "correct" way of grieving. Despite the indescribable pain that she has endured, the final message is of hope. A footbridge was built in 2012, for the London Olympics, to enable spectators of the rowing events held at Dorney Lake to gain access from Windsor Racecourse. It was removed after the Olympics. [58]The author, Carol Smith, is a journalist. This story is told through a very unique lens because of this. This book is about Carol dealing with her own grief after losing her son at only 7 years old. She uses her journalism skills as a tool to do this. Throughout the book you are not only taken on a journey through her struggles, but the struggles of those she has wrote about too. I feel the actions she took to help herself are to be commended, and that others could benefit from trying the same. She writes about the way others cope when put in tough situations, and learns from their experience, to help herself. By writing this book about her process, it in return helps others with theirs if they choose to read this memoir.
