By contrast, Capaldi and Wanamaker start from the position of ringing a bit false. They’re far older than the characters, which isn’t a big deal, but it’s a dissonance amped up by Capaldi playing Roland as a sort of twitchy, gurning, eccentric uncle type. I can absolutely understand why he didn’t just go with the flow on Roland, but while often highly amusing, he just comes across as too weird for the eventually tragic relationship to be truly touching, especially because he somewhat drowns out Wanamaker’s more straitlaced Marianne. In Marvel’s multiversal TV show ‘Loki’, there’s a version of the eponymous hero who is a crocodile – great fun, but too bizarre to actually be the ‘proper’ version of Loki. Capaldi isn’t quite that out there. But he explicitly feels like a Roland Variant, not the real deal. A fascinating experiment, though, and his ‘Doctor Who’-begat fans will doubtless lap up the goofing. And what about Tovey? Is he happy with how things are? He’s spoken in the past about frequently feeling too young for the task at hand. As 40 approaches, can he shake off a bit of the boy in him? “I’m always someone that, if something makes me feel uncomfortable, I push through it and then I sort of catch up … But when it comes to me now, I feel the most settled and the most calm I’ve been for a long, long time. Definitely.”

It’s astonishing how much quality drama Payne manages to capture in just 75 minutes. This makes Constellations a demanding play to watch but, much like those helium balloons, it carries the profundity of its weighty topics lightly. In November 2012 Constellations was named the winner of the best play category at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, making the 29-year-old Payne the youngest winner of the award. In 2022 the Hawaiian premiere was produced by the KOA Theater opening June 17th. The show was directed by Kevin Keaveney and starred Chris Jaymes and Eden Lee. [13] The 2016 Studio Theatre production was nominated for 6 awards at the 2017 Helen Hayes Awards in Washington, D.C. [16] The production won 2 awards, with Tom Patterson receiving the Robert Prosky Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play and Lily Balatincz receiving Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play. [17] [18] The first thing is that so many people keep talking about how totally new this structure is. Except, it isn't. David Ives wrote the mini-play Sure Thing in 1988 and published in in 1994, and then there's the film "Groundhog Day", which was 1993. So, no - not a totally new structural concept. Although the constellations have no scientific significance, astronomers have retained them as convenient visual reference points; it is much easier to speak of a star in Orion than to give its geometrical position in the sky. No matter which version of Marianne’s story she is playing, Morris is open and impassioned, with Gleeson’s droll, sometimes bewildered Roland a perfectly understated foil to her energy. Beneath a canopy of chandeliers the couple’s image is reflected in designer Molly O’Cathain’s mirrored surfaces and ceiling, with snapping shifts in time and place gorgeously created by Paul Keogan’s clusters of light and Liz Roche’s movement direction. Does ‘Constellations’ itself stand up on a basic,cross-dimensional level? I think it’s still good, but its dabblings with the quantum realm and string theory feel less outre now than they did ten years ago. Maybe that’s because Marvel has brought a lot of similar ideas into huge mainstream films and TV shows, or maybe it’s simply the fact that ‘Constellations’ is now a pretty famous play. Underneath the bells and whistles it’s undeniably a bit Richard Curtis-y. And maybe it could do with a brand new production next time out: this one is great, but there’s the danger it becomes like that Stephen Daldry version of ‘An Inspector Calls’, so definitive it never gets replaced. Payne shows the couple, after a chance social encounter, going through the varying rituals of co-habitation, betrayal and separation. Or, alternatively, they may go their own ways, bump into each other again at a ballroom-dancing class and achieve a possibly durable union. All this is wittily done and played, in Michael Longhurst's Theatre Upstairs production, with great skill by Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins: the scene where Spall obliquely proposes to Hawkins by dwelling on the distinctive types of bees is played in three different ways, and each time produces subtly different reactions.

What are constellations?

The play follows Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a physicist, through their romantic relationship. Marianne often waxes poetic about cosmology, quantum mechanics, string theory and the belief that there are multiple universes that pull people's lives in various directions. This is reflected in the play's structure as brief scenes are repeated, often with different outcomes. Which constellations are seasonal depends on your latitude and will change from place to place around the world. From the Earth's extremities the visible sky is fixed. At the Poles all constellations are circumpolar; at the Equator all are seasonal. How can you find constellations?

Some historians argue that many of the myths associated with the constellations were invented specifically to help farmers construct an accurate understanding of the sky. From ancient times farmers knew that for most crops, you plant in the spring and harvest in the autumn. Therefore, by ensuring the planting took place at the correct time the risk of a failed harvest was kept to a minimum, particularly in regions where the differentiation between the seasons was slight.Some scenes are repeated five times with varying outcomes and altered moods, an endeavour that could easily resemble a rehearsal room exercise in the wrong hands. It doesn’t happen here, thanks to some very fine acting, though it is also testimony to Michael Longhurst’s direction that the play feels alive with ideas, action and fizz, but is balanced with stillness and depth. Changes of scenes (and time-frames) are sometimes indicated simply by a tonal inflection or change of stance. The story all but reveals its tragic ending early – we travel towards an untimely death – but its plot ingeniously keeps us guessing. In January 2013 Payne revealed that a film adaptation was under way. [14] That plan has since been shelved.

A quantum physicist and a beekeeper meet at a barbeque. They hit it off, or perhaps they don’t. They go home together, or maybe they go their separate ways. In the multiverse, with every possible future ahead of them, a love of honey could make all the difference.
