The people of Shotet are very skilled in combat, in contrast to the Thuvhesit, who only possess a meager army of trained soldiers. At the time the story takes place, the Shotet are governed by the Noavek family, who are known for having a history of killing siblings and other family members, and the Shotet slowly go to ruin under their governing.

But fighting for what’s right might mean betraying their countries, their families, and each other. there are the superficial physical differences - cyra has darker skin, is much taller and … sturdier than tris, and by the end of the book, something happens that alters her appearance in a way that i personally think is SO FREAKING COOL, and also ghastly. but more importantly, her personality is not just warming up the tris leftovers. they are both proactive and badass with the fighting skills without getting too sentimental when violence needs doing, but cyra has had a much harder path dealt to her than tris, and it has toughened her worldview, giving her more depth and darkness than tris ever had. YA - There is a general YA formula, but if you mix it in well with a creative story, it doesn't matter if i I was very disappointed with this book. Maybe after Divergent my expectations were too high, and it probably not fair to compare the tow although when a book is released saying the writer of Divergent it is hard not to expect a lot and compare the two. Also knowing Veronica Roth was a Star Wars fan and I am a Star Wars fan I figured what could possible go wrong. At the end of Carve the Mark, our main duo found themselves struggling to find out where they fit after the massive events that took place. And also struggling with their feelings for one another and what that means for their fates. Now as Cyra begins to take her place as leader of the Shotet people, she must face the fact that her father may be alive and ready to start war. Meanwhile, Akos and Cyra are confronted with their actual fates and have to decide what they will become. The story centers around two main characters: Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth. Cyra is the second child of the Noavek family, the ruling clan of the Shotet; her currentgift is pain, showing itself visibly in dark, shadowy tendrils that flow under her skin. Anyone who touches her skin experiences extreme pain, while she herself is constantly tortured by pain. As a child, she accidentally killed her mother with her powers during a fit. Afterwards, her father and brother Ryzek push her away, and she's largely raised by a maid. One year, her father does not return from the annual scavenging journey, and Ryzek is forced to rule in the wake of his presumed death. He manages to slightly improve the conditions of the Shotet, but forces Cyra to torture people for him, holding the threat of telling how their mother really died to the public over her head.Eijeh is more like Ryzek all the time, even in his mannerisms. Cyra refuses to torture anyone, but Ryzek eventually realizes he can beat Akos to make her comply. After this realization, she kisses Akos and then says he does not have to worry about her doing that again. The Divergent author builds out this new world--one reminiscent of Star Wars, with its discussions of 'the current' and 'currentgifts'--while still presenting the stark brutality of the circumstances both protagonists find themselves in."--Entertainment Weekly The romance in this book was not as subtle as in the previous, but it was still not the main focus, and I find myself being drawn to romance-less books more and more, so it served me well. The family relationships and friendships were also pure in their own way, blooming in a time of harshness and destruction. Ιt all made me tear up, and I realised how much I love well-built dynamics. In their galaxy, there is a force called the current, which flows through every living being, and can be seen visibly as the "currentstream," manifesting as lights wrapped around the planets. Originally, the current was seen as holy and sacred to the people of the planets; though still revered by many, fewer and fewer carry on their worship of the current. Every person in the galaxy has a currentgift, which is a certain talent unique to them; their currentgift typically develops during puberty or times of dire need/extreme emotion. edit: I wrote a little synopsis here but imma remove it to make this a spoiler-free review for Carve The Mark]
