The character of Kevin had originally been named Bryan, and had been cast with actor Jonathan LaPaglia. Like the current Kevin character, the Bryan version of the character was also gay, but had been married, and was going through a divorce. The Bryan incarnation of the character also had a child, and he and his ex-wife were going through a custody battle. Bryan's child later reappeared during the first season as the show, where he was recast as "Gabe," Joe's child from his first marriage. The show has subsequently received positive press attention for its depiction of Kevin Walker, who came to be seen as a breakthrough in the depiction of gay men on television: he has had several love interests, has kissed his boyfriends on-screen, and had a commitment ceremony with his partner Scotty in the second-season finale—the first such ceremony ever shown on American network television between series regulars rather than minor recurring or guest characters. The Walkers seem to all being going through an adjustment period, as Cooper acts out against Sarah while Luc becomes a member of the family, Justin has trouble finding the same passion for medicine that he had while serving in Iraq, and Kevin struggles with his newfound unemployed status. Paige feels that she needs to connect with her Jewish self, so the family plans to celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. Meanwhile, with Ryan and Rebecca’s help, Holly finds a way to keep her financial future from unraveling, and Kevin and Scotty finally agree on a possible surrogate.

Sarah, Tommy and Saul - who are most involved with the Walker family business - learn that William embezzled the company's funds. The business revelation also reveals two major revelations on the personal front: William had a mistress, Holly Harper ( Patricia Wettig) whom he kept for decades, and the couple were believed to have had a child, Rebecca ( Emily VanCamp). The first half of the season introduces the family and their search into William's secrets around Ojai. The second half focuses on Rebecca and her integration into the Walker family. Her mother (Holly) also becomes involved, as she goes into business with Tommy to open 'Walker Landing,' a vineyard.Emily VanCamp left the show and only appeared in two episodes during the fifth season to close out her character's storyline. [6] Patricia Wettig left the show mid-season after her character Holly Harper followed her daughter to New York. This season sees the whole Harper family absent from the show. [7] Kitty’s collapse at the beach was caused by a clot in her lung. Medicine has cleared it, but there’s still the issue of her tumors. Her best option is a bone marrow transplant.
