Another gem of a B-side, “The Piccadilly Trail” detailed images of loneliness and personal betrayal (“Can you ever explain your need to cause me pain?”) and it’s all the more powerful as the hurt in Weller’s voice is palpable despite the jaunty bossa nova beat and the sophistication of the song’s arrangement.

Retrieved 15 March 2023.When "Town Called Malice" reached number one in the UK the group had the honour of performing both it and its double A-side, "Precious" on Top of the Pops – the only other band to be accorded this honour being the Beatles. [ citation needed] After the string-laden soul ballad " The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow)" peaked at No.2, the band followed with their finale and another No.1, " Beat Surrender". The latter featured Tracie Young on vocals; a few months later, she also guested on The Style Council's debut single " Speak Like a Child". Caulfield, Keith (4 May 2023). At the time, Bono had written it for Burmese academic Aung San Suu Kyi, who was under house arrest from 1989 to 2010 for her pro-democracy activities. Following her ascent to the office of state counsellor, she was criticised for Myanmar's inaction to the genocide of the Rohingya people. Bono said he "felt so let down" by her and decided to re-write the song's lyrics for a different person, instead paying tribute to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his leadership against the Russian invasion of his country. [14] Bono and the Edge performed the new version of the song on 9 April 2022 for Global Citizen's Stand Up for Ukraine livestream, which was organised to urge world leaders to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees. [18] As vocals were being recorded for Songs of Surrender and preparations were being made to mix the album, Bono and the Edge were invited by Zelenskyy's chief of staff to visit Ukraine for a performance. They immediately halted work on the album and within 3–4 days boarded a train into Kyiv. [19] They performed the new version of "Walk On" for Zelenskyy in a subway station during their 8 May visit. Much of the band’s output during the mid-80s reflected Weller’s support of the U.K.’s left-leaning Labour Party, with The Style Council becoming the standard-bearers of British protest pop with their second album, 1985’s Our Favourite Shop. A Top 10 hit and a jubilant call to arms, the album’s single, “Walls Come Tumbling Down” bristled with anger and energy while “The Lodgers” and the urgent, wah-wah guitar-driven “Internationalists,” laid into both Thatcher’s Conservative government, injustice, and greed in general with an intensity more redolent of Weller’s previous band. The decision to split was solely Weller's. Explaining at the time that he disliked the idea of continuing for as long as possible simply because they were successful, he later told The Daily Mirror in advance of a 2015 Sky documentary on the band, "I wanted to end it to see what else I was capable of, and I'm still sure we stopped at the right time. I'm proud of what we did but I didn't want to dilute it, or for us to get embarrassing by trying to go on forever. We finished at our peak. I think we had achieved all we wanted or needed to, both commercially and artistically." [36]

The Jam never made it in the USA, for two reasons. Firstly, their music just wasn’t accessible, and it wasn’t until ‘Grunge’ came along and broke through the bland AOR music that was dominating the airwaves in the USA. Secondly, The Jam refused to take on long tours [6 to 8 months], which you need to do to sell records in America. Bob Ezrin – production (6, 29), co-production (1, 3–5, 7–16, 19–20, 22–23, 28, 31–32, 34–35, 38–40), mixing (38)

Throughout their career, the Jam were managed by Weller's father, John Weller, who then managed Paul's subsequent career until his death in 2009. [15]Jon George: “This felt like a really good opening moment for the record—the nakedness of the piano was the perfect summary of where we were at. We bought a piano for this record, and we really had fun being able to lay out tunes bare-bones, with just the vocals and piano, to see if the songs were working in their purest form.” Bubbling Under the Top LPs". Billboard. Vol.91, no.19. 12 May 1979. p.27 . Retrieved 25 March 2021. Heim, Mark (24 February 2023). "U2, Notre Dame team up for exclusive vinyl release of upcoming 'Songs of Surrender' album". Writing and recording [ edit ] The album was mostly recorded by guitarist the Edge and lead vocalist Bono. Beat Surrender” was not included on any original Jam studio album, as their sixth and final release, The Gift, had been released some eight months earlier, in March 1982. Polydor filled the Christmas void with a live Jam compilation covering their entire lifespan, Dig The New Breed, which hit No.2. In the new year, the complete Jam singles catalogue was reissued and created chart history when, in the first week of February, all 13 releases were in the Top 75. The final single was, of course, on the two-CD retrospective Snap!, which the label released in October of the following year, to great success. “Beat Surrender” had two weeks at No.1 in the UK in December 1982, before giving way to Renée and Renato’s “Save Your Love.” In the US, airplay was, as ever, hard to come by for the band, and the single failed to chart, just like all its predecessors.I might be wrong and ready to change my mind but three details leave me very doubtful about the genuineness of this pic sleeve, I mean doubtful it was made in 1982 or 83: Bob Ezrin – synthesiser (6), cello (40), organ (29), acoustic guitar (32), sound effects (32), strings and string arrangement (32) Review: He's Still the Changingman - Brilliant Paul Weller Just Keeps on Getting Better".
