About this deal

The challenge with this approach is that it creates a big demand for watering. Pots dry out faster than plants grown in the ground, and the crops I grow all mature in summer when the heat is highest. The combination of big plants growing in containers during the hottest days of the year means that watering may be needed twice daily. Infrequent and inconsistent watering at worst can kill the plant, but can also spoil the crop. The plants may set much less fruit, and the fruit they do produce may split or mold, or not swell to full size. Log on to the Harvst control app (a web app compatible with any smartphone, tablet or laptop), choose the watering zone, and edit your settings. You can do this remotely if your greenhouse has a WiFi connection. If not, you need to be near the control box to access the dashboard via the app. How do I use the tank-to-tank transfer system? Ideally, a gardener will inherit a plot with a shed already standing on it. If not, a solution will be needed for storing tools. Some kind of dry storage is vital to preserve the life of tools, and to provide shelter on the odd(!) occasion when there is a rain shower. Legumes Avoid watering peas and broad beans when young but they will need water at flowering time and about 2 weeks later. Runner beans need constant moisture but French beans can cope with dryer conditions. Cucurbits Squash can survive and produce fruits from minimal watering but courgette plants need to be kept constantly moist.

Firstly they decided to install two strip concrete footings as their ground is unstable at certain times of the year. Next they constructed a timber frame to support the Perspex sheeting. This sloped down to a standard gutter system to supply the storage tanks below. The posts are seated in standard Drive-in Post Anchors. Important As their allotments never had access to running water, they decided to improve the situation and construct their first water station. The water station is additional to plot holders own water collection systems, used for emergency and dry spells though the summer months. Batterypumps are specifically designed so they can be used in isolated locations where there isn’t a mains power supply. They are small and light weight making them extremely convenient and easy to transport, store and fit. There are two types of power that are used for water pumps: direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC). You need to first decide if you need a surface or submersible pump, determine how much water you plan on moving and measure how far the water has to travel from its source. Besides these questions, you’ll also want to be aware of the top brands for solar fountain pumps. Type of Water PumpBattery powered water pumps are used for processing, transfer or filling – for example a battery pump could be used in a water bowser to enable the pumping of water for watering plants etc. Its uses are numerous, from acting like a hoe to weed from within a row of crops, to loosening the soil around carrots before pulling them up. My favourite hand trowel task is carving the shallow channels in the soil that I use for planting seeds.

The PWS solar-powered swimming pool pump is a heavy-duty tool used for both home and industry purposes. Made to keep swimming pools, thermal springs, larger fish ponds, and irrigation systems in top shape, it is worth it to spend the extra money on this high-quality pump. Planting out - When planting out young plants it is always recommended that you water the hole or trench very well, before putting in your seedlings. This means the root system of your young plant will have instant access to water, also encouraging them to grow downwards to seek new water supplies. The best time to water your crops is in the evening or very early morning, using a watering can and aiming at the roots not the foliage. Water thoroughly on a weekly basis and soak the soil, this encourages the roots to go deeper in search of moisture. Water appropriately to the crop, plants also need different amounts of water at varying stages of growth and too much water can affect yield and taste. The greenhouse watering system can be programmed to use any combination of timers, soil moisture readings, or a “solar boost” for hot days. Each of the two watering zones can be controlled independently. Similar to solar panel size, you’ll also need to consider your inverter size. The solar inverter is responsible for converting the solar panel’s electricity into a usable form for your pumps and fountain heads, so it’s important to make sure your inverter is compatible with your solar panel’s output. Solar Energy StorageYour salad might want misting or spraying. Your tomatoes would prefer drip feeding or bottom feeding. A tray of seedlings would like a combination of spraying and bottom watering. A perfect automatic polytunnel watering system will need to deal with all these situations. Combined with a 1200mAh battery, the solar energy can keep this pump running on sunny days, cloudy days, and even at night. This product carries a full 3 year manufacturers warranty covering both faulty materials and faulty workmanship, it does not cover general wear and tear or damage, batteries, blades, bulbs and other consumables. In the unlikely event of a fault the item returned is subject to fair wear & tear and must not have been used beyond the scope of it's design. Please note that cordless products will normally have a shorter warranty of just 1 Year for the battery and or charger supplied. Polytunnels are hot environments from spring to autumn. On a day when it is only 10 degrees outside, if the sun is shining, inside a polytunnel the temperature may be 40 °C, or more. In the heat of summer, the temperature can easily surpass 50 °C, even with all the doors and side panels are open. The way I use my polytunnel creates a much bigger requirement for watering. I like to grow a range of heat loving plants like tomatoes, peppers, aubergine, cucumber, chillies, Inca berries, and tomatillos. If I grew these in beds inside a polytunnel, I would run the risk of building up soil born diseases, as I would be using the soil over and over to grow the same crops. To avoid this, I grow all my plants in big pots and containers. This allows me to recycle the soil every year, and use fresh compost for my plants.

The Mini and the Pro kits pump water from a tank or water butt next to, or inside, your greenhouse or polytunnel. The mini pump is submersible (placed inside the tank) and can be up to 4m away from the water valves. The pro pump is placed inline with the inlet hose, with a dual intake filter to keep debris out.The maximum vertical head (MVH) is how far the pump is capable of pushing water upwards. Even though MVH might not be as important for bird baths or a fish tank, the vertical height does matter if your water pump is at the bottom of a fish pond or placed in a deep well. Seep irrigation uses buried lengths of hose and is highly efficient as water does not ‘run off’ the surface away from plants, and less will be lost to evaporation. This is ideal for permanent beds with perennial plants, including watering fruit bushes and small fruit trees. Tip 7 - Less But Lots!

There are much cheaper varients such as mini pumps that attach to a power drill but they really don't pump much volume and won't really work on a battery drill. If you have mains power it may do what you need and is worth investigating. Although some solar systems rely solely on only the rays of the sun to power their systems, more advanced solar-powered water pumps have batteries that store energy for use overnight or during cloudy weather. This video introduces the principals of how to create an automatic watering system for a polytunnel on an allotment, or any other environment where there is no mains water supply or electricity. If you have access to a mains water supply, you may like to see this video instead. Why Buy: The Eco-Worthy solar fountain water pump has a super adjustable nozzle that allows you to customize the spray heads on your fountain project. The company offers a one-year warranty should your solar panel or water pump have any issues so that you can enjoy your new fountain worry-free. 3. Viajero 3 Watt Solar Panel Fountain Pump Best of all, garden twine is a natural product that will rot, there is no need to throw away or tidy up old twine at the end of the summer, it can simply be added to the compost heap.

Storage

Access to water, and how easy it is to water crops during the height of summer, is one of the most important considerations when planning an allotment. If available, choose a plot near a tap or water pump. This will save considerable time and energy. Excellent for greenhouses and polytunnels, as well as for patio plants and container gardening, these systems eliminate the need to carry water at all – albeit after the expense and effort of setting them up.
