About this deal

We just saw Kallor who has lived so long that everything appears banal to him. So now we switch to Kruppe who uses this entire chapter to say, "Inconsequential? Bah!" As he leaves, he recalls an old prayer about Darkness receiving every breath unto death. But not for the Andii since Darkness is closed to them. He feels alone and wonders if the High Priestesses cry out in ecstasy or desperation, or if there was even a difference between the two. We are not being presented with a very nice view at all of Desra, via what the others think of her. Even a dead ghost here: “Desra is a slut. She has a slut’s brain, the kind that confuses giving with taking, gift with loss, invitation with surrender. She is power’s whore, Nimander…” Makes me wonder what is to come in Desra’s future—whether she’ll cause problems because of her attitude, or whether she’ll find absolution.

What the hell is happening with the bhok’arala? I mean, it’s quite cute that they’re following all of Pust’s moves, and funny to boot, but what is making them act like this? Just poking fun at their god? And an equally het-up what the hell has Iskaral Pust done with his wife? Is it just wishful thinking on his part that she’s now trapped in a funerary urn? This cat shadowing Torvald reminds me of my own—being where it shouldn’t be, getting underfoot, causing problems, but being so damn cute you just can’t resist petting it.Duiker is met by the bard who knows that the historian struggles to write down the chain of dogs, he says that maybe expositional prose is not a good fit and offers to allow him to use his voice. There's a little meta exchange about contradictory tales, with the bard claiming that he makes no distinction between lies and truth. The scene ends with a mic drop moment- "Call me Fisher". Yeah Amanda, it wouldn’t surprise me if Kallor is standing in for certain readers here. Then again, I wonder how many of those readers would still be here to get this line from Kallor. Though I guess from some of our comments, I guess a lot of folks just suffer through the philosophy but keep going. Kadaspala is out to take revenge on Anomander Rake for the death of his sister. It clearly hasn't done any good for Kadaspala's sanity, never mind that Anomander Rake had nothing to do with Enesdia's death. Down the Rabbit Hole: Alluded to and subverted. Harllo, while working at the mines, climbs down a seemingly endless chute, at the bottom of which he meets a T'lan Imass and helps him. However, after that, Dev'ad Anan Tol simply walks away, leaving Harllo behind, and the magic of the discovery dissipates. Especially because the T'lan Imass manages to get himself interred within the Azath grounds immediately.

I’m not sure I like what the merchant says: “I surrendered everything, all my wealth, for yet another indifferent god.” It is as though he thinks that he can buy the protection of a god, somehow deserves the protection because he’s given over all his wealth.

The Dividual: Scorch and Leff. While Scorch seems perpetually surprised by everything, Leff is more on the suspicious side, but they always act as one entity, and mostly serve as comic relief. They turn out to be surprisingly competent, however, when the need arises. OK, outside of all the layers/metaphors/sociological insights of kelyk, at its core, it’s just kinda gross. Thus endeth my deep insight for the day. We end the chapter with another run down- Thordy is setting flatstones in her garden in a particular pattern. Spite is still lounging in the ship, she has noticed the proximity of her kin. And little Harllo will soon be lost to darkness. Torvald Nom, who only had a minor part during the first fourth of House of Chains, gets his own point of view storyline and more screentime in this book.

Estraysian D'Arle, a Council Member in Darujhistan, father of Challice Vidikas (neé D'Arle) (First mentioned) [2] (First appearance) [24] See, Cotillion is definitely the clearer of the two here, when he says: “Perhaps the most telling truth of old friendships is in how their dynamics never change.” He’s quite certain that he and Traveller are still friends. Avab Tenitt, a man whose life was 'touched' by Hood (in his mortal form) as he walked the streets of Darujhistan (Mentioned only) [6]The retired Bridgeburners are enjoying their retirement when Assassins from the Assassins' Guild suddenly come after them, though the assassins soon discover that the Bridgeburners aren't easy marks. As far as the white hounds, they’re not related to Paran’s freed hounds, but don’t worry—we’ll get more…. Redeemer. I do not seek your blessing. Redemption will never be mine, nor should it, not by your touch, nor that of anyone else. Redeemer, I bring no gift to set upon your barrow. I bring to you naught but myself. Worshippers and pilgrims will hear nothing of your loneliness. They armour you against all that is human, for that is how they make you into a god. But you were once a mortal soul. And so I come, my only gift my company. It is paltry, I know, but it is all I have and all I would offer. Cuven, aka 'Brother Cuven', a long dead monk of K'rul's Temple in Darujhistan (Mentioned only) [17]

We created a long winded introduction to TtH including character summaries and some plot reminders to help you along.
