The Sony XDR-S41D portable digital radio features an extendable aerial, but you’re unlikely to have any issues with reception unless you’re relatively remote. In our location reception of DAB and FM stations was comparable to other radios we’ve reviewed. The radio did find all the digital radio stations which are available in this area. Power comes from the included AC adapter or batteries inserted in the rear battery slot. According to Sony four AA (LR6) batteries should provide 25 hours of listening to DAB stations or 27.5 hours of FM listening.
This radio is very well laid out, with an intuitive interface and well-located buttons. It’s one of the easiest digital radios on the market to use, so it could be a good choice for technophobes and elderly people who find other DAB radios to be too fiddly.Like most Sony products, the XDR-S41D feels fairly robust. It’s not as stylish as some other DAB radio radios on the market, but it has a functional design and is available in a choice of colours. There are plenty of good-looking digital radios, but once using one becomes part of a daily routine you soon realise the touches that make a radio easier to use. The Sony XDR-S41D is very straightforward. It scans and finds all the stations available in your area automatically and saving and accessing your favourite stations is very easy with the 5 dedicated preset buttons. However, if you’re using it with batteries it will forget your presets when the batteries run out. This portable radio is designed to be easy to use, and as such, it has a very simple set up process. When you turn it on for the first time, it does a full auto tune for DAB stations, taking only a few seconds.

The Sony XDR-S61D is very easy to use and doesn’t really require any setting up—just plug it in, turn it on and let it find the DAB stations available in your area.You don’t get an equaliser to adjust the bass or treble, but there are no issues with volume levels if you’re listing to the XDR-S41D in a confined space.
