It’s a similar story in gaming terms. The Galaxy A52 5G’s average frame rate of 45fps in the GFXBench Manhattan 3 on-screen test matches the performance of the OnePlus Nord N10, Pixel 4a and Moto G 5G Plus, but the iPhone SE (2020) is on an entirely different level in terms of graphical output. Samsung sells this phone with either 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. We couldn’t find the phone in that latter model in either the US, UK or Australia, so it seems you’ll be limited to that first option. If you need extra space, there’s microSD support up to 1TB. The A52 5G’s camera arrangement is mostly the same as before, with a 12MP (f/2.2) 123-degree ultra-wide camera working with a 5MP (f/2.4) depth-sensing unit and a 5MP (f/2.4) macro camera for up-close photography. However, the main camera is now a 64MP affair – an increase from 48MP – complete with a wider f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilisation. Cheap Samsung phones like these can be a great way to save money on smartphones. You get the quality reconditioned Samsung phone that you’re looking for, without paying a price that you can’t afford. If you’ll be playing a lot of mobile games you may want to look elsewhere, but this is still a capable phone, its chipset just means you may have to wait a touch longer for apps and games to load rather than it being unable to undertake basic tasks.

What we can say for sure though is that Samsung devices don't stay at their full price for long. We're likely to see some fall in price this year for certain. How can I use the handset's 5G? Actual user memory will vary depending on the mobile phone operator and may change after software upgrades are performed.

A lot to like, but hard to love

If you think you’ll one day make use of 5G connectivity, we’d recommend choosing a phone with the next-gen option rather than one without, as it means you won’t have to upgrade your phone to get the faster internet when it’s a more readily available option.

Quality-wise, I have no major complaints about the cameras. Images look pretty darn good, for the most part, and the A52 5G even manages to hold its own against the terrific Pixel 4a in some instances. Pictures are filled with detail, it does a good job at cutting through the darkness in low-light conditions, and HDR worked without a hitch. It did have a tendency to increase the exposure a bit too much for my liking, though, but this isn’t something that the on-screen slider couldn’t fix. With dimensions of 159.9 x 75.1 x 8.4mm it’s fairly large despite being a cheaper handset. It weighs 189 grams, which is neither heavy nor light for a smartphone of this type.
