We’ve got a heap of recipes perfect to make in the pressure cooker or slow cooker – why not take a look? What diets is this Pea and Ham Soup suitable for? The pulses should be thoroughly rinsed after soaking and placed in a saucepan of fresh water. Bring them to the boil and keep at a boil for 10 minutes before reducing the heat to a simmer. This boiling time is needed to kill off toxins which can be present in some pulses. We would not recommend using bicarbonate of soda in the cooking water as it can cause the pulses to become too soft or mushy and can sometimes leave a soapy taste. Used to make fermented foods in Japan and Asian countries, soy milk, tempeh and soybean oil is also created from them. Liquorice, alfalfa, peanuts and carob are also all members of the legume family (so it does make sense to say many beans have a 'nutty' taste!) Pulses is the name often used to refer to the dried seed of these plants (or indeed the plants themselves).

Once your salt has dissolved, and you’ve got your pot of beans on the stove, turn the burner to medium-high heat. Bring the water to a rolling boil, but only allow it to boil for 2 minutes. Pulses are brilliant sources of protein, (meaning they are of particular use to people who don’t eat meat, fish or dairy), they’re also great for extending meals, throw in a handful to casseroles, stews and soups to provide extra nutrients and stretch the meal further.Simply add your peas and hot water to a large bowl or container, then heat them up in short intervals, stirring occasionally.

If you have leftovers after cooking beans, they will keep well in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days. Be sure to store leftover beans in a container that isn’t made of metal.Once you’ve finished cooking dried beans, try them in some of these recipes. Feel free to add some aromatics such as garlic and onion. Return the reserved chunks to the Instant Pot and stir well and set to keep warm until you're ready to serve.
