The MeacoCool comes with two types of window kits: the standard and the flexible window kit. The biggest issue with portable air-con units is the installation process required for efficient cooling. As the law of conservation of energy states, energy (in this case heat) can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another. Hence, you will need to vent the heated air generated by the AC out of the home using the supplied concertina hose and pile of window fittings. But more on that below. A cost-effective air conditioner that works brilliantly – but it’s a little on the noisy side

We didn’t find it any noiser than other air con units on the market, and the fact that two different types of window kits were supplied was a really bonus. The latter allows you to turn the unit on and off, adjust the fan speed and temperature, switch modes and set the on/off timer. These controls are mirrored on the panel at the front of the air conditioner, along with a simple LED screen that indicates the target temperature. Design-wise, the MeacoCool MC Series 7000BTU Portable Air Conditioner looks pretty good when assembled, although it does have a bit more going on visually than other models we tested and I wouldn't say style was one of the key elements of its design Like most air conditioners, the MeacoCool MC Series 7000 uses refrigerant to cool the air, but it does use the more sustainable R290 variant so it’s a little greener than older air-conditioners that use R410A or R22.

I also tested the Russell Hobbs RHPAC11001 Portable Air Conditioner Unit at the same time as the MeacoCool MC Series 7000BTU Portable Air Conditioner and while both are effective units, the MeacoCool MC Series 7000BTU Portable Air Conditioner is best suited to those seeking a compact and lightweight unit that's easy to move around the house or transport. To test out its cooling powers, I positioned the unit in a 4.5m by 4.5m room (approx. 15ft square) with higher than normal ceilings. With rated maximum noise levels of 65dB in high mode and 53dB in low fan mode, the MC 7000 is noticeably louder than your average tower fan (we measured the noise levels at 62dB and 56dB respectively). There’s also a slight buzzing that accompanies the unit while it cools, too, so it isn’t the ideal choice to run overnight in a bedroom. The new MeacoCool range is smaller, lighter and more compact in size making it easier to fit within a room and be comfortably moved around.And lastly, there's the unit's Sleep Mode. This is only available using the remote control and when the air conditioner is in Cool Mode. Not only does the LED display monitor dim when in this mode, but it also automatically switches to Low Fan Speed (which of course makes it slightly quieter). When in Sleep Mode, after 1 hour in Cool Mode the pre-set temperature will increase by 1 degree Celsius, and after another hour it will increase by another 1 degree Celsius. The temperature is kept constant for ten hours. Cooling powers The Sleep Mode keeps the unit in low fan speed to ensure the lowest possible noise possible. This can be combined with the Off Timer to ensure you do not wake up cold and shivering during the night. Unlike most cooling units this model can be moved alone if you live by yourself, is easy to reposition thanks to its castor wheels, and is a great slimline option to stow away in the car and take to the caravan or a holiday let to keep cool in the summer heat. Alas, the weather hasn’t been particularly warm during the test period so I can’t give more accurate details than this yet, but it’s a good sign that the unit managed to keep rooms cool even without the installation of a window kit.

The air conditioners draw the warm, humid air from your room over a cold surface, which cools and dries the air simultaneously. The cold air is blown out of the front of the portable air conditioner whilst the warm, humid air is expelled from the space via a exhaust duct. Noise-wise, I found the Meaco Portable Air Conditioner slightly louder than the Russell Hobbs one, but only marginally so, and a little extra noise kind of comes as part of the deal if you're running an air con unit, and is well offset by the relief of that icy air during a heatwave! Verdict You do this by removing the two filters at the rear of the unit and then using a hoover to clean both sides. Alternatively they can be cleaned with warm water.To get the best out of your air conditioner we recommend pre-cooling rooms, such as your bedroom, so that the room is nice and cool before it needs to be used. This is easy to do with the timer function allowing you to set both an on and off timer anytime between 1 and 24 hours. Combined with the use of Sleep Mode lowering the fan speed and noise level, the MeacoCool is the perfect product to allow you to get a good night’s sleep.
