The regular breeze keeps things interesting. One of the most iconic golfing destinations in Scotland is St Andrews, located in the county of Fife. The Old Course at St Andrews is perhaps the most famous of them all and is considered the “home of golf”. This historic course has a length of 7,305 yards and a par of 72. Designed by Daw Anderson and Old Tom Morris, it offers a challenging yet rewarding golfing experience. The course is known for its iconic Swilcan Bridge, which has become a symbol of golfing history. St Andrews is a must-visit destination for any golf enthusiast. With a resume like that, It’s fair to say he knows a thing or two about golf in Scotland! So, we thought we’d take the opportunity to get him to share some of his most memorable experiences to date.

Golfing nirvana. It may be outdated for Bryson, but it’s not outdated for us. It’s no surprise that our No.1 course in the world, No.1 golf course in Britain (and the best in Fife) is also our best golf course in Scotland. Set between the railway and the sea, from the 5th to the 13th is an immense test in a breeze. Burns are in play on a number of holes and green slopes can be difficult to read. Tough and unremittingly excellent. 19. The Machrie Islay, Argyll – NO CHANGEAnother area which continues to grow in popularity is the area around and to the north of Inverness. The magisterial links is the perfect blend of strategy, history, and occasion. There are people who say those latter two elements do not deserve to be included in a ‘course’ ranking, but they are inextricable aspects of the Old, just as much as the views around the turn are to Turnberry’s Ailsa. Crail Golfing Society is situated in the picturesque fishing village of Crail on the East coast of Fife. Much like Askernish, the experience is the adventure, the remoteness, the feeling of being up against the elements. I don’t want people to come here expecting a top class facility as this isn’t possible in this remote setting; what they will find is a simple course in a wonderful setting with enough quirk and charm to offer up some great fun. If you are driving up to Scotland from the south there is a very good chance you will be passing Powfoot - just 20 minutes from Gretna Services.

The club is however renowned for its immaculate presentation and you won’t be disappointed if you add this to your itinerary on a golf trip to Fife. 11. Crail Golfing Society (Balcomie Links) As with any Open course, the condition is fantastic. The turf here, as at nearby Panmure, is unusual in that is slightly peaty, not the sandy links soil of others. The course always surprises me in its compactness – on the television, it looks so open and grand, however in real life, it feels so very tight, especially in the height of summer with the wind up. Castle Stuart, Nairn and Royal Dornoch are the big attractions but there are several other courses there which are great additions to your trip.Old Tom Morris and James Braid were the creators of Lanark golf course and with that pedigree it’s no surprise that this is something pretty special.

If Scotland is the home of golf, St Andrews really is the golfing Mecca. And the Old Course at St Andrews is the birthplace of the sport! However, there is a second list of favourites that are slightly more hidden and I think this is where I find the charm, the likes of Kilspindie, Askernish, Ladybank, Downfield, Crail Old, Elie and Brora.” A course that divides opinion, and feels like it always will be. The views over the Auld Grey Toon are glorious, and the course is undoubtedly fun and playable. Gullane 3 is a 5,100 par 66 course and is a perfect addition if you are looking to do 36 holes in a day - you should be able to get round in under three hours quite easily. All of this means we are able to offer an up-to-date opinion. I think that matters, because golf courses are living, breathing things. They change, they evolve, they develop. We ask what they’ve done recently, what they are in the process of doing, and what they are planning to do. If the 8th green is patchy, or the style of bunkering inconsistent, the club has a chance to explain why. There is often a good reason.Remote and beguiling with outstanding coastal views. Barely 5,000 yards, but gorse, blind holes, water hazards, and elevation changes give it teeth. It pains us to drop it down as it has done nothing wrong, but the panel verdict was that it was a little too punchy in the top 50 last time.
