As such, the owners will start to see their pets as annoyances rather than friends, leading to abuse. As the author puts it, "if you decide to adopt a pet, do research and see if it's worth the work". Related, but we once see a pet owner who cannot stand to look at his new pup anymore because they were gifted to him as a Replacement Goldfish for their deceased dog.
