About this deal

Similarly, the cards above the significator will tend to denote thoughts and ideas while those below will stand for unconscious forces. I get a lot of questions about this spread. People want to know how to interpret it. While I can certainly give some form of method on how to interpret it, looking at a grand tableau is an art form. It is not about the corners mean this, that card means that, it’s about connecting everything together and coming with a coherent story. Like Tarot, the cards all have symbols; unlike the Tarot system, however, each card does not represent a particular stage on a journey, and there are no major and minor arcana. The symbols are very direct; a Key for the 'answer', for example, or a Book to represent 'knowledge'; a Ship is a journey of some kind, a Snake is a betrayal. The Rider represents an arrival; the Sun, success. First of all, you can incorporate some of the methods from other readings, particularly the 9 card spread. As usual in most divination practices, the best advice is to practice and experiment, and keep what works for us.

Each one of these houses act as a container, ruling what’s going on in a particular position in the grand tableau. In fact, when interpreting, the meaning of a card that falls in a particular house is modulated by the definition of the house, coloring its interpretation. The Grand Tableau is THE big Lenormand reading: but it potentially holds such a lot of information that can seem overwhelming. This was a really extensive topic which required detailed examples, therefore, I did a separate post here. Next, it makes sense to read the major lines of the Piquet: The four rows of 8 cards, and the eight columns. In the Piquet, some columns are made up of 4 cards and others of 5. Some authors might omit the fifth cards of the middle four columns if they like to isolate the bottom line - I personally don’t.The Sun represents a successful or happy thing. Therefore, the Letter + Sun might mean a successful conversation or even a new publication! Mirroring Several of the points that we used in the 9-Card spread will be in play again - in a modified version - here in the Grand Tableau. The cards that are to the significator’s left will represent the past, those to the right the future. The farther away the cards are from the significator are farther away in time, while those close are representative of the more immediate circumstances. You can learn more and more about each card using reflection, mirroring and knighting. I'm not used to knighting as of yet but some people do that. I will not explain that here because I do not do it.

One application I can see is it tells about what is happening in the various aspects of a querrent’s life. For example a ring falling in the house of the bouquet could mean legal/contractual relationships are doing well. And the mirroring technique could be used to glean more about whether it is a ealtionship/contract; while knighting could be used to infer what’s going on at a deeper level on that account. But there are other layouts that can take on Tableau-style features - meaning having their cards being read as part of different lines. My own Hourglass and Diamond layouts are not rectangular or square, but they have Tableau-style features because their cards can be read as part of different lines in these configurations. You can find out more about these layouts here and here . A knight piece can move from its current position, jumping over pieces, and landing slightly off its original trajectory. They always move two spaces (left, right, up or down) and shift one more space! The Fish is associated with money and prosperity and the Dog can refer to a friend or colleague. If we take the Fish to suggest work or business, then we can look forward to an exciting new venture that is financially and materially promising. You can also read around particular cards just like they are the keycard in a 9-card reading to get a picture of that life area. In my own readings, I tend to that for the Querent card only to provide an overview focused on the Querent, but it is possible to do it for any area of interest. 6. Houses, Knighting, Mirroring & Reflection Aspects Offer Additional Detail on Different Life Areas

Precise questions are much better and more clearly answered with 5-card and 9-card readings than the Grand Tableau. The Grand Tableau is a general all-areas reading, with the capacity to further explore whatever life areas you want in depth. It is not helpful for answering yes/no questions. It is helpful for if you want to look at life in general over a long period of time. In my Grand Tableau readings, I usually focus either on the general or on life areas people are interested in rather than on answering specific questions The way to go about it doesn't differ much from the previously discussed three-card reading. The best technique for a beginner may be to read it straight through, as if it were a sentence, with each card being a single word or expression. A line consisting of Rider + Scythe + Lady + Lily + Ring may thus be interpreted as “the news gave a sharp blow to the woman, and the old pattern repeats itself". Here, instead of one continuous sentence, we now get a series of short ones, each giving us further insight into the matter at hand. We are starting to get a picture here of a love whose sudden passions were kindled from loneliness, and may end mysteriously. Mirroring Lenormand Pairs

It is super fun to look for patterns in a Tableau, and dig out amazing details about our reading. It is really what makes the Grand Tableau a contemplative process more than anything else. It is just amazing to spend a peaceful afternoon over a 36-card Tableau, just contemplating all of these interesting messages, and amazing connections between the cards. Some readers like to choose an appropriate significator for themselves or their querents before completing readings. More commonly, readers find the significators in the cards they draw, whether they draw three cards or 36 cards. Pairs Usually, past present and future influences are indicated by where the Querent card (the Man or Woman) falls in the spread Remember, the nine-card portrait is made up of three-card lines. If you can read three cards, you can read a portrait. And that does mean that you are on your way to reading a Grand Tableau! So how exactly do we go about knighting? I can tell you’re eager to learn, so let’s dive right into things!

But we don’t stop here. On top of all the lines we can interpret, we need to connect them into a story. Columns. The Snake, Cross, and House in the left column suggest that we’ve had to end an involvement with a place or workplace, possibly because of a disappointment. But he Key, Lily, and Clover in the middle column are very positive and confirm there is an opportunity to step up to something better. In the left column, we clearly see positive changes coming through. The Stork, Moon, and Flowers, bring positive changes. The Moon can soften the Stork a little and suggest that the changes are somewhat gradual. If youcan read a three-card line, you can interpret a Portrait. And if you can read longer lines, you caninterpret a Tableau! It is easier than it looks. Just take it step by step.A card “knights” a significator when it creates an L-shape with the significator, the way a knight moves in a game of chess. Knighting is one of the most advanced reading techniques, and it’s typically used to reveal hidden influences. As we can see in the first 3 cards (snake, garden, child), the way to work around what the corners are describing, is to consider the grand tableau as a public display where we play with all that complexity. We have to trust ourselves to be able to overcome that treacherous display. Otherwise, the line supports financial and practical affairs abroad with the help of a friend, family, or anyone in a position to help out.
