About this deal

I don’t think I’ve talked about this much on here but I am utter trash for Korrasami and I cannot believe it took me this long to read this. I don't know about the rest of you, but I miss Legend of Korra so freaking much. Every couple of years, I get this insatiable urge to rewatch Avatar: The Last Airbender, and ever since Korra ended in 2014, I've folded them in together as one big rewatch. I find them both so lovely and comforting and fun and beautiful. I've also been reading Gene Luen Yang's official comics continuations of Aang and the gang, and really enjoying them, so you bet your ass when I heard that there would be an official comics continuation of Korra, and written by one of the show's co-creators, no less, I've been waiting for it like a little kid on Christmas. The library finally got a copy to me last month, and after I read it (twice in a row), I immediately started rewatching Avatar: TLA. I'd finished both series within the week. Which is all to say, this book felt like Korra in all the ways that matter.

Deliberate Values Dissonance: While it's somewhat softpedaled by seemingly making all of Korra's and Asami's friends and immediate family tolerant and enlightened, most of Avatar-verse society in general is (according to Kya, at least) not very appreciative of variant sexualities. The Water Tribes believe in what amounts to Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell, the Earth Kingdom is generally conservative, and the Fire Nation was originally accepting but outlawed homosexual activities during Sozin's time on the throne. note The Fire Nation's current attitude is not made clear, as Kya only speaks of that time without elaborating. a b c Hoover, Bryan (July 31, 2017). "Review: Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One". Comic Crusaders. Archived from the original on August 5, 2018 . Retrieved August 4, 2018. The creation of the spirit portal in Republic City disrupted radio frequencies from working properly. Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Skoochy is revealed as this as he fled on sight of Mako and Bolin's police car and initially is tight-lipped about info on the Triple Threats, but opens up when Mako points out that lives are on the line.Heteronormative Crusader: Fire Lord Sozin decreed that same-sex relationships were criminal. It also turns out that the Earth Kingdom is pretty tough on non-hetero relationships as well. Heather Campbell (cover artist), Michael DiMartino (writer), Irene Koh (interior artist), Vivian Ng (colorist), Nate Piekos (letterer), Paul Reinwand (layout artist). When Korra warns Asami about the Spirit World, she tells her that the ground might spontaneously drop out, which happened to her and Jinora in " A New Spiritual Age".

Watching the Sunset: Korra and Asami in Part 1, although Korra is looking at Asami instead of the sunset. In most cases it's justified by Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Buddhist/Tibetan monks (whom Air Nomads are based on) forbid procreation but not sex, so same-sex relationships were perfectly allowed, while the Fire Nation is an Expy of Japan, which was tolerant of same-sex relationships (called "Wakashudo" and seen as a honorable practice in the warrior class) until Emperor Meiji took over and westernized the country. I highly recommend to read The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One, but only after watching the tv series. It won't make lots of sense otherwise.i am so thankful the legend of korra exists. it’s sad how little sapphic rep there is, but i’m glad it’s slowly improving. Another thing I find interesting is the revelation that Fire Lord Sozin had decreed a ban on same-sex relationships during his reign. Seeing as he clearly had feelings for Avatar Roku in the original 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' show, I interpret this as both an expression of denial (linked with self-hated and shame; aka internalised homophobia) and a further kind of punishment for Roku, for the unrequited love in this instance. Also, Mako's reaction to Korra and Asami coming out is... different, less enthusiastic than everyone else's. Given that he had dated both girls and screwed them over more than once, maybe, on an unconscious level, he views this resolution to the infamous love triangle as a threat to his manhood? A karmic middle finger to him? Again, perhaps this will be explored in the sequels. I hope the writers can still make him interesting without involving anything related to romance. In the republic city conflicts are occurring between gangs, refugee people feel insecure without their homes and elections are approaching. Things don't improve with an entrepreneur who wants to use the portal as a tourist center. Love Confession: During Part 2 it's implied that Korra was going to give one to Asami during an intimate moment in her office but she gets nervous and leaves instead. At the end of the trilogy Korra tells Asami she loves her and Asami responds in kind.
