About this deal

The main character runs an historic British wayside inn, The Green Man. He lives there with his second wife and pre-teen age daughter from his first marriage. His elderly father also lives with them. In his pursuit and eventual destruction of Underhill and the monster, Maurice gains self-knowledge. He begins to realize that his “affinity” to Underhill has taken many guises. Maurice has reduced people to mere objects, beings manipulated and controlled by a more powerful master, just as Underhill controlled his monster. For Underhill, further, sex and aggression and striving for immortality are all bound up together; it becomes clear, as Maurice struggles with the evil spirit, that the same holds true for him.

This is almost the perfect pub book. It is set in a pub, its protagonist is the publican, it is an effective and exciting thriller, a ghost story, a social satire full of wit, a sombre reflection on the fragility of love and life, and the only novel I know in which God makes a personal appearance.

It is highly unlikely that The Green Man preceded this horror renaissance, because it is a resounding failure as a horror novel. Its legacy lies more perhaps in stirring memories of Fawlty Towers (1975), only with much more sex and shenanigans.

Maurice Allington is the owner of "The Green Man", a country inn that he claims is haunted by ghosts. He is usually either frightening guests with his ghost stories, or trying to seduce them, but he slowly comes to realise that some of his stories may be true. As the tension grows, so does Maurice; he passes through various stages of awakening to the truth of himself and another world. Underhill, as a doppelgänger, is evidence that evil is a real and active presence in the world and not just a concoction of the mind. His ghost is also a means by which Amis can credibly account for the forces that seek Maurice’s destruction—all that afflicts, mystifies, and weighs on him.The series won the 1991 BAFTA for Best Original Television Music (by Tim Souster), Finney was nominated for Best Actor, and Masahiro Hirakubo was nominated for Best Film Editor. Maurice leads a fairly ordinary life, yet is interested in sex and having a threesome with his wife and the wife of a friend. His usual day sees him buying food for his restaurant, dealing with his employees and customers, and dallying about with said wife's friend. Maurice sees himself as sort of a carefree Hugh Hefner type. He's happy; he's not happy. He drinks too much; he has a lot of aches and pains, and then he sees a ghost...

A final scene wraps up the novel's loose ends: Maurice destroys the figurine, and he employs the modish, cynical and repellent parish priest (who makes God out to be, in the young man's words, a “suburban Mao Tse-tung”) to exorcise Underhill and his green man. Maurice wonders why a being like Underhill should have been drawn to him, of all the potential targets across all the centuries, and is humiliated by the possible explanations. Maurice's wife leaves him (for his mistress), but his daughter proposes, and he agrees to, a plan to move away from The Green Man and get a fresh start. Maurice is somewhat relieved, while recognising that he will remain until his death trapped in all of the faults, petty and otherwise, that constitute him as Maurice Allington.
