About this deal

The second main character is Gilles, a young man who was ‘rescued’ by Louise and taken under her wing. They become close. He has quite a secret. We learn of his difficult upbringing, and about his going to work for his uncle at a young age. This is Book 3 in her Joubert Family Chronicles, that are inspired by the Huguenot diaspora. It follows on from ‘The Burning Chamber’ (2018) and ‘The City of Tears’ (2021). The ending left the door open for the reader to learn more about her life- I just hope I don’t have to wait too long as it’s difficult to remember what happened in earlier books when there is such a big gap! Feeling every one of her sixty-eight years, she raised herself on one elbow, and gazed at Piet sleeping beside her. His beloved features, grown white with age, were as familiar to her as her own. Against all odds, they had been by one another’s side for nearly fifty years. Together they had faced grief and despair, they had lost their way and been reconciled once more. Blessed with three children and three grandchildren, they had suffered, but kept going. Companions-in-arms, they had stood firm against the vicissitudes of life, the evils of war and the deaths of those they loved. They were old, but they had somehow kept living when those around them stumbled and fell. They had survived.

The Ghost Ship is peopled by the most wonderful characters, including Gilles, abused as a child, but now making the most of the opportunities Louise has given him. And then there are the worst of humankind, such as Gilles’ mother and step father, or the awful captain Joost.

He laughed. ‘There is no need to frown, madomaisèla. There is nothing you could say that I would not be glad to hear.’

Event: Cheltenham Literature Festival - in conversation with Emma O’Donoghue, chaired by Sarah Shaffi Speak, for the sooner you do, the sooner we might take breakfast.’ He grinned, the lines on his weathered face creasing his pale Northern skin. ‘I find I have an appetite this morning.’ Seeing her hesitate, he reassured her. ‘You can tell me anything, Minou, you know you can.’ Details: budlitfest.org.uk/event/santanu-bhattacharya-rachel-connolly-kaliane-bradley-hilary-mantel-emerging-writers-event/ Friday 29 September The dress felt frivolous to buy from an independent designer off Kings Road, but I wanted something special, and I felt amazing in it. The footwear remains a peculiar decision. They were so incredibly uncomfortable, and they’re not boots, they’re not shoes – what are they? I normally choose big chunky platforms, so I’m not sure what possessed me that night. I haven’t worn them since (apart from this photoshoot).

To fill out whatever time is left in her schedule, she also writes plays, and sits as the president of the arts festival and the patron of the flower festival in her native Chichester, where she lives with her husband, Greg. When the worst happened and Louise found herself cornered by those who despised her, her life in danger, the loyal Giles stepped up.

While the first few chapters were slightly confusing, it smoothness out by the second part and the narrative was quite easy to follow. Choosing a female main character for this time period is an incredibly difficult feat and Mosse not only rose to the challenge, but she succeeds in creating an emotional attachment to not just Louse but also Gilles.

The Ghost Ship—which follows The Burning Chambers and The City of Tears—is described by the publisher as “an epic tale of courageous women battling to survive in a man’s world, of vengeance and breathtaking peril on the high seas, of long-buried family secrets and a love story spanning three generations”. Romance. Revenge. Across the seas of the seventeenth century, two seafarers are forced to fight for their love and their lives. The sequel to The City of Tears , The Ghost Ship is the third novel in The Joubert Family Chronicles from bestselling author Kate Mosse. But the bravest among them are not who they seem. The stakes could not be higher. If arrested, they will be hanged for their crimes. Can they survive the journey and escape their fate?
