About this deal

I was very happy to read about the Lit and Phil and seeing it get such a nice mention in the novel – where books are cherished and where one of the characters goes to read. One of the first sightings of Vera was at a gym in Gateshead - or rather in the snooker hall above Low Fell Life Gym - where Blethyn was inside filming while location vans took up space in its car park. Arriving at the scene, DI Vera Stanhope is relieved to have an excuse to escape the holiday festivities. As she stands on the silent, snow-covered station platform, Vera feels a familiar buzz of anticipation, sensing that this will be a complex and unusual case. Soon Vera and Joe are on their way to the south Northumberland town of Mardle, where Margaret lived, to begin their inquiry.

Despite all that, I did somehow like the odd assortment of characters in a small community, the way they all had secrets and complex pasts - although the ending disappointed me. I just learned that Joe (David Leon) is not returning next season. It's such a great partnership, I hope the series doesn't suffer. We get another great look at Vera and her team (Joe, Holly, and Charlie) as they investigate the murder of a woman on one of the train cars that Joe and his daughter Jessie were riding. The case takes them to Harbour Street, a location/area where things are sliding right along to total disrepair and ruin. Filming for that had been first noticed in Tynemouth in September 2020 where Blethyn - masked up between scenes - was seen, together with Vera's familiar Land Rover, in Beach Road and Broadway. In the opening episode, called Witness, the story started with the finding of a body at the base of Collingwood Monument. Airing on ITV in January 2019, this series saw cast and crew hard at work across the region, in locations ranging from Alnmouth and Amble in Northumberland - including Braid, Northside, the harbour and quayside - to Jesmond and the Grainger Market in Newcastle. The discovery of skeletal remains in Hollowthorp Woods leads to Vera re-opening the case of a seventeen-year-old school girl, Carrie Telling, who went missing some thirty years earlier. Found with the body's remains were a camera, a company credit card and a telephone number for an abortion clinic. When another murder occurs, it becomes apparent to Vera that the killer is somebody who had something to hide thirty years ago. Enquiries lead them to Dee Sinton (Tilly Vosburgh), an alcoholic and old friend recently thrown out of the shelter where Margaret volunteered. When Dee is found dead, Vera knows the key to this new killing will be found in Margaret’s past. Weekly Top 10 Programmes: ITV+1 w/e 8 May 2011". Broadcasters' Audience Research Board . The mystery deepens when Vera and Aiden discover that Deena died in the caravan before it blew up. The "island" seen in this episode isn't actually and island at all. It's what is known as Church Hill, which in reality is just at the other side of the Aln Estuary.

Local arcade owner, Larry Crowe (Dave Hill) has a direct link to the family. His son Paddy died in a botched robbery at the Kenworthy home forty years ago. A witness saw him arguing with David on the night of the killing and a search of his property uncovers a bloodied baseball bat. But Larry has a watertight alibi and it’s clear he wasn’t the only person David met that night. Joe and his little girl Jessie are on a train when Jessie notices that another passenger, elderly Margaret Kraszewski, has been killed with a single stab wound. Vera visits the coastal town of Mardle, where Margaret lodged with singer Kate Darrow, her two children and boyfriend Stuart. They all praise Margaret as an almost saintly woman and are amazed that anybody would want to kill her. Margaret volunteered at a women's hostel and when Dee, an alcoholic prostitute who lived there, is also found dead Vera suspects a connection, especially as Margaret wanted to report something to the police just before she died. Pub landlady Valerie Furlow tells Vera that Margaret and Dee were good friends who once lived together in the same house on Harbour Street. She believes that Margaret's Polish husband was violent to her and, as he disappeared suddenly thirty years ago, Vera wonders if he was murdered. The chief beneficiary from Margaret's will proves to be Dee and Vera learns that years ago Dee was a rape victim whom certain people set out to avenge. Now another rape victim provides a clue to Margaret's killer. — don @ minifie-1 It's a neatly crafted piece of work, and a reminder that the great success that Ann has enjoyed in recent years, both with these books and the Shetland novels starring another likeable cop, Jimmy Perez, is well deserved." Weekly Top 30 Programmes: ITV w/e 22 May 2011". Broadcasters' Audience Research Board. Archived from the original on 15 December 2012 . Retrieved 2 July 2011. But when the train is stopped due to the bad weather, and the other passengers fade into the swirling snow, Jessie notices that one lady hasn't left the train: Margaret Krukowski has been fatally stabbed. The story definitely dragged on and on. I grew bored several times and almost gave up, but I wanted to find out who the murderer was and why he or she killed the women. I honestly can’t say that the story was compelling, nor were any of the characters particularly likeable. In short, by the end of the book I just didn’t care that much. When a young woman, Lizzie Faulkner, is shot late at night outside the holiday chalet where she and two friends are staying for the weekend, Vera and Joe suspect that her murder is linked to poachers operating in nearby fields. They identify a suspect, Robert Doran, but despite being in the vicinity at the time, he denies being responsible for Lizzie's murder. Vera begins to suspect the woman's death may have been a case of mistaken identity, and that the intended victim may have been one of the chalet designers, Corrine Franks, who was meant to have been staying there at the time. A link to a tragic car accident a few months earlier involving Corrine, which led to an innocent woman losing her life, appears to confirm their theory. When Corrine is later killed in a hit-and-run, the team finally get the breakthrough they have been looking for. Mardle wasn’t a place for tourists, even in the summer. There was nothing beyond the fisheries except the harbour, enclosed by the wall. The boats there were dark shadows, half-hidden by the drifting flakes.
