About this deal

This single malt is a sherry fan’s dream. Matured in a combination of first-fill and refill Oloroso sherry butts for all twelve years of the maturation process, this expression is spicy, sweet, and highly sippable. A truly memorable whisky for fans of sherry-matured single malts. The uncomplicated nose first brings with it a whiff of freshly kneaded dough next to a bowl of bran cereal. This is followed by a spoonful of leftover rice pudding. Quite comforting as it reminds me of breakfast during my school days. The freshness jumps out next - almost as if I decided to take my bowl of cereal out to my garden on an early spring morning. The relaxing aromas of freshly mowed grass and little white flowers completes a delicate and pleasant nosing experience. These are often rich, sweet drams ideal for after dinner sipping. But it’s also known for some incredible easy going whiskies, often described as having ‘grassy’ flavours alongside citrus and orchard fruit notes, that are ideal for those making a first foray into the world of single malt. Speyside is the busiest of all Scotland’s whisky regions, with more distilleries than anywhere else in the land, including many of the most famous names in single malt. Indeed, the world’s best selling single malt lists are regularly topped by The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and The Macallan, which all hail from the Speyside region. Whiskybase B.V. That straight-from-the-barrel strength will be around 62% – it’s released in limited run batches so the strength will vary according to exactly which cask it came from. Be brave and have a little sip neat, then add water until it reaches your preferred taste. It’s one of those whiskies that I don’t hate, am glad I tried, but won’t be trying again anytime soon because I’m let down by it. There was nothing offensive about it and the aroma and palate both had some nice aspects to them, but they came across far too light and flighty, It’s like the diet version of a really good Speyside and leaves me wanting more, but never quite able to find the substance I want in this glass. This is definitely a whisky that needs a higher proof and maybe even another year or two in the barrel. This is an approachable single malt for people who aren’t too keen on sherry-finished whiskies. Taste: sweet grassy clean malt. It really finds all the tender parts of your mouth (and hits them). It is all on sour notes mixed with grass and floral notes. Flowers that weren’t on the nose show up here. Still tons of lemon, lemon-grass, and just plain grass. Complexity, Balance: I am impressed with both the complexity and balance at this age (and from this distillery). A top grassy Speysider. The balance of sour and sweet is very interesting to observe. The complexity is way more then the “other” Glen’s I can think of. And the balance of the sweet, sour, grassy, malty on the nose, tongue and finish were wonderful. The only thing really out of balance was where some floral notes - that didn’t surface in the nose or the finish - came out on the taste. This award-winning whisky begins with aromas of cinnamon sugar, fresh mint leaves, dried orange peels, and butterscotch. Take a sip and be transported to a world of ripe berries, oaky wood, dried fruits, vanilla beans, and sweet treacle. You’ll be met with just a hint of smoke at the very end. The only thing I would change is the ABV up to 46%. Invest in a bottle, take a few sips, and slowly explore its flavour and you’ll also discover there’s more to it than those naysayers will admit. It has a clean, grassy taste that hints at the barley from which its made, while subtle oaky, vanilla spices show off its cask conditioning. There are also orchard fruit flavours to sweeten it up – some juicy pear and crunchy green apples – and, after a short while, you’ll find its mellow character gliding down with ease. Aberlour 12 is one of the unsung heroes of the introductory single malt whisky world. It’s sweet, slightly spicy, and completely sippable. When it comes to 12-year-old single malts, there are few more complex than Glenfiddich’s expression. It’s sweet, rich, and filled with memorable oaky flavors. Aberlour 12 Aberlour Initial notes of caramel and lemon zest waft up from the glencairn and pave the way for some fruit and floral notes to come sifting through. A bit of honey, vanilla and whisky spice notes come drifting through with a touch of oak and herbs. It may sound like there is a lot going on… but there isn’t. It’s all very light and airy. Coming drifting through as hints and wisps.

Maturing

The Balvenie is a much admired distillery, producing popular expressions that we think are at their best when served after dinner, with their Speyside flavours having a fruity pastry character to them. Like most distilleries they also like to mix things up a bit and have recently added whisky matured in French oak casks to its range. The whisky carries some sweetness throughout, with bright zesty citrus along with hints of tangier fruit flavours and there’s a creamy smoothness that gradually seems more like milk chocolate the more you sip. At the finish we detect some soft, spicy warmth from the oak that helps it linger for a while. Even if you don’t know anything about scotch, you’ve probably heard of The Glenlivet. The brand’s flagship expression is its 12-year-old single malt. This double oaked expression is aged in both sherry and bourbon casks before it’s vatted, proofed, and bottled.

These French casks previously held the aperitif Pineau and they add new layers to those created by the American Oak casks the whisky starts out it. The whisky is honey sweet and cakey, with vanilla, squishy stone fruits and hints of toasted nuts thrown in, but there’s also something a little different – something fresh, bright and floral and too complex to pinpoint exactly. It’s a top notch whisky with a subtly interesting twist. The tastes you’ll discover will, like the strength, vary according to release, but they always have lots of flavour and a sumptuous creamy feel to them. The most recent release, Alba, was matured in an American white oak (Latin name Quercas Alba) and to the creaminess you can add tasting notes of tropical fruits, vanilla and warmer cinnamon spice. It’s a delicious whisky, however much you decide to dilute it. Aromas of toasted vanilla beans, dried orange peels, wood char, and mint swirl around the nose. The palate is filled with caramel candy, raisins, apricots, and a gentle, nutty sweetness throughout. The finish is warming, sweet, and memorable.
