Obviously, he has to come to terms with his new and damaged face. Not only that, all his friends have to come to terms with his new face. The book was inspired by an incident when Zephaniah came face-to-face with Simon Weston, a veteran of the Falklands who was facially-disfigured during the war:

With this being my 3rd reading of 'Face' (reading the book twice, and the play once), I still love this book and the message it teaches the reader. This book was set in England – or somewhere in an English town which had alot of distinct slang terms. Like Gangsta Rap, Teacher’s Dead offers an anatomy of violence for today’s youth, revealing its complex causes in ways that trouble the boundaries between criminals and victims. More broadly though, and what characterises all of Zephaniah’s writing to date, is its stress on the redemptive forces of love, laughter, and peace. Benjamin Zephaniah (7 August 2012). When I’m not doing my 7.5 hours at work or mindlessly watching YouTube videos; you’ll find me lurking in bookstores, talking to myself (no joke I actually do this); or eating. There was one girlfriend that I had, and I actually hit her a couple of times, and as I got older I really regretted it. It burned my conscience so badly. It really ate at me, you know. And I'm a meditator. It got in the way of my meditation." A Poet Called Benjamin Zephaniah". Benjaminzephaniah.com. Archived from the original on 7 August 2011 . Retrieved 10 May 2011.

Listen to Your Parents (included in Theatre Centre: Plays for Young People – Celebrating 50 Years of Theatre Centre (2003) Aurora Metro, also published by Longman, 2007) As an adult reading this I guessed exactly what was going to be the major plot twist in the book by just reading the blurb, but any young human reading this wouldn’t even begin to think that a car crash would be the cause of Martin’s eventual facial deformities.

Zephaniah was born and raised in the Handsworth district of Birmingham, England, [3] which he has called the "Jamaican capital of Europe". [4] He is the son of a Barbadian postman and a Jamaican nurse. [5] [6] A dyslexic, he attended an approved school but left aged 13 unable to read or write. [6] During his childhood he was given an old, manual typewriter which he says inspired him to become a writer. It is now in the collection of Birmingham Museums Trust. [7] What happens next will change Martin’s life and looks, and show him the true meaning of strength, courage, discrimination and friendship.Recipients of Honorary Awards". Staffordshire University.
