About this deal

Lifting the relatively compact gimbal and while still relatively light compared with some larger gimbals, it’s not as light as the likes of the WeeBill 3.

Even though the RS 3 Mini is smaller than the RS 3 Pro, it’s still aimed at the Mirrorless market and has a price tag to attract enthusiasts, but the size and features will also attract the pros looking to go light. Staying with the axis and the carbon arms, these have been extended slightly to enable the mounting of some of the new midweight professional cameras, such as the Sony FX6 and Canon EOS C70. For a gimbal of this size to take the weight of either of these cameras is impressive. While I don’t have access to either of these cameras, a Canon C100 MKII comfortably sat on the DJI Ronin RS3 Pro without issue and with plenty of clearance. The next feature worth noting is the wireless connectivity to compatible cameras. For most modern cameras like the Canon R7, you can connect through the BlueTooth wireless link to activate the shutter, meaning that no wires are required. You can go a step further for Sony users if you have a compatible lens, where you can control the lenses zoom with the front dial on the gimbal. This makes using and balancing the RS 3 easier than many other single-handed gimbal stabilisers. Once done, the DJI RS 3 Mini is everything you could want for mirrorless camera stabilisation; the balance and reaction speeds are excellent. A Sony A73 with 35mm or even 24-70mm and the rig works as well as any other; swap for a Canon EOS R5 C with 24-70mm, and that only just pushes the small gimbals limits!DJI RS 3 Mini supports Bluetooth shutter connection and camera control cable connection. Detailed operations are as follows. Looking at the features of the Ronin RS3 Pro and the first thing you notice is the enhancements in design. The longer carbon arms and large touch screen OLED make mounting the camera and navigating settings that much easier. Fewer wires with Bluetooth shutter control

While the small RavenEye is an ideal solution for most, DJI has also added Pro-Grade video transmission and monitoring compatibility. The DJI RS3 Pro is equipped with DJI O3 Pro video transmission technology. This enables video transmission to a distance of up to 6km and full compatibility with the High-Bright Remote Monitor that was launched alongside the Ronin 4D. This monitor supports 1080p/60fps live feed to multiple receivers. The performance of the Ronin RS3 Pro in isolation is excellent. Other manufacturers don’t, as yet, match the build quality; the fact that it will equally easily balance a Sony A7 III or Sony FX6 without issue means plenty of scope for all levels.

RS3 PRO

The build of the DJI RS 3 Mini is small and solid, with only three parts to the entire rig. Firstly you have the actual RS 3 Mini with full aluminium arms and an extremely well-finished design. Then into the base, you can screw in the small tripod that enables you to sit the gimbal down for set-upset-up and balancing, and then when in use, this also doubles as part of an extended handle. The last major part of the RS 3 Mini is the base plate that bolts to the base of your camera and then slots directly into the tilt arm of the gimbal. Build and overall quality is excellent, and once charged and powered on, balancing initially takes a little time to master. The small amounts of movement require patience as each axis is balanced, and despite the powerful motors, it’s still best to perfect the balance from the outset.

Added support for mapping M button to the C1 or Fn1 button of the Sony A7S3, A7M3, ZV-1 and NiKon Z50 and Z6II cameras. Optimized the follow curves for PTF mode to make the follow speed of tilt and pan axes stay the same. Ultimately once you work out where all the wires go for the focus motor, RavenEye and camera control, it’s all quite straightforward. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review, there are few set-up notes; however, most of what applies to the set-up of the focus motor and Raven Eye again apply here. Full compatibility with the DJI High Bright monitor system

RS2

Due to the huge variety of uses, I can only imagine the product designers and electrical engineers at DJI sweating over what seems like an impossible task. Setting up the DJI RS3 Pro at the base level is easy; plug it in balance, and you’re ready to go. At the next level, plug in the RavenEye, hook in a mobile phone, and you have wireless video transmission, all very clever; then you have the HighBright Control screen, and so on.

The big feature of the RS 3 Mini is that it’s small and lightweight, over 40% less than the RS 3 and 50% lighter than the RS 3 Pro. This means it is an ideal solution for anyone who finds those larger gimbals too heavy to use comfortably or wants a nice compact gimbal stabiliser for their mirrorless camera. The size and weight also lend the gimbal for travel, documentary or any scenario where you need to be agile and travel light. Imaging modes such as panoramic and timelapse, along with a few others, can be accessed and, with the automatic shutter release, are all simple enough to use, with the App taking control of most of the difficult features. Added photo capture, video recording, zoom and autofocus support for Sony A7R5 camera with supported Sony E mount lenses using a Multi USB Camera Control Cable. To use autofocus on the Sony A7R5 camera, half press the camera control button on the gimbal. Ultimately in isolation, the DJI Ronin RS3 Pro is an excellent gimbal stabiliser with so much potential, especially once you add the Focus motor, Raven Eye or High Bright control monitor, which I will look at in a separate review.

Ultimately this is a good tool at a very appealing price, and if only the balancing process could be a little more precise it’d earn that 5th star. Gimbal-shot video is much more in evidence these days, and making it possible without adding too much weight or size is a great achievement. We can see real appeal for most professionals –an ideal second camera choice for weddings, for example. Once the camera balance has been found, a cable can be plugged into the camera’s USB-C port and directly into the side of the gimbal. The shutter can easily be activated from the direct control button on the grip. Regarding control, the small 1.4-inch screen might be smaller than the 1.8-inch screen on the other two models, but it is still more than sufficient for guiding you through the options and settings.
