About this deal

An original idea carried out well. Mina’s storytelling is always vivid and exciting, and Anna is a complex, well-rounded figure Jeff Noon, Spectator I] was gripped, impressed by her insight into the mind of a psychopath… A grim novel, but a very good one. Allan Massie, Yorkshire Post, 2017 Books of the Year Mina's first Paddy Meehan novel, The Field of Blood (2005), was filmed for broadcast in 2011 by the BBC, starring Jayd Johnson, Peter Capaldi and David Morrissey. Thank you to NetGalley, Mulholland Books and Denise Mina for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review. I listened to the audiobook. In the past I've been frustrated when Mina's books get narrators with English accents instead of Scottish (her books are almost entirely set in Scotland, much of this one is too) and this time I was pleased to have a Scottish reader who has to use a whole pile of accents over the course of the book and does them all splendidly. A suspenseful, professional-grade north country procedural whose heroine, a deft mix of compassion and attitude, would be welcome to return and tie up the gaping loose end Box leaves. The unrelenting cold makes this the perfect beach read.

Beyond the Book

Endlessly surprising... This incredible novel...seems to have been written in a white-hot rage.... Mina has always written with a head full of ideas and a mouth full of tough talk. Here, she’s finally got a story big enough to hold it all together. New York Times Glasgow itself is an imposing element in her writing – the rhythm of the speech, the cadences of the humour, the sometimes restrictive feeling of a small city where family and strangers can become overfamiliar. If a reader were arriving fresh to Mina’s work, one of their early hits really ought to be her last book, The Long Drop, the semi-fictionalised account of the serial killer Peter Manuel and an evocative portrait of Glasgow in the 50s. Such a busy involved plot. I found the story within a story, the podcast more interesting. Indeed this is the mystery she becomes preoccupied with that gives her some drive to do more than just try to re-invent herself again. I loved his developing character and built-in frailties; it is Fin that is often the agent whether consciously or not that propels the story to great heights.

I do still feel like that. A lot of artists don’t feel they could distil their national identity down to one. I don’t even feel it’s limited by Europe. I did grow up in Paris, Amsterdam and London but I don’t really know who is from here. All the artists I know are from other places as well.” It is the story of wealth and power that can buy silence and if necessary obtain silence in any way necessary. It is told in the first person by a young woman, Anna. who has lived a lie, taken on a new identity and gone off grid to hide from someone willing to silence her forever. Her life is broken, her identity compromised and a podcast she listens to further awakens her past. I wonder how our MC managed to hide her identity for a decade, she seemed careless, impulsive and to be honest not so bright. And the villain was just... irritatingly bad. I enjoyed the story for the most part, despite my frustration with the main character’s refusal to be honest. And given what I’ve learned so far, i just can’t understand it. I enjoyed the inclusion of a podcast as part of the story, but even that is a little ridiculous. It would be the shortest podcast ever made, and for what purpose? Maybe it gets explained later, which would make it worthwhile. It is clear from the very start of Denise Mina’s Conviction quite how much fun she – and her readers – are about to have… Mina is such a classy writer and Anna is a darkly brilliant creation Alison Flood, Observer Then an unexpected visitor arrives on her front stoop, a meddling neighbor intervenes, and life as Anna knows it is well and truly over. The devils of her past are awakened -- and they're in hot pursuit. Convinced she has no other options, Anna goes on the run, and in pursuit of the truth, with a washed-up musician at her side and the podcast as her guide.
