About this deal

The CHEMetrics Ammonia test kits employing the well-established Nessler reagent* to determine ammonia concentrations are applicable to drinking water, clean surface water, good-quality nitrified wastewater effluent, and seawater testing. The supplied stabiliser solution is used with some waters where the calcium and magnesium concentrations causes cloudiness of the reagent. Adding a few drops of the stabiliser solution (Rochelle Salt) will prevent this cloudiness. References recommend distilling samples prior to analysis. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/l) ammonia-nitrogen, NH 3-N. Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Mineral Water > Ammonium Total ammonia is the sum of both NH 3 (ammonia, the un-ionised form) and NH 4 + (ammonium, the ionised form). Total ammonia is what is measured analytically in water. Ammonia toxicity is influenced by pH and temperature, whereby an increase in either will convert more NH 4 + to NH 3, thereby increasing toxicity. Wu B et al. ADSCs-derived exosomes ameliorate hepatic fibrosis by suppressing stellate cell activation and remodeling hepatocellular glutamine synthetase-mediated glutamine and ammonia homeostasis. Stem Cell Res Ther 13:494 (2022). Oxidation of 5-aminosalicylate is carried out in the presence of a catalyst, nitroprusside (also called nitroferricyanide), which results in the formation of indosalicylate, a blue-colored compound. The blue color is masked by the yellow color (from excess nitroprusside) causing a green-colored solution. The intensity of the resulting green color is directly proportional to the ammonia concentration in the sample.

The AquaCare Ammonia Test Kit is exclusive to Maidenhead Aquatics. This Ammonia indicator test is a must-have for freshwater fishkeepers and includes 40 tests that should be carried out weekly or any time you are concerned about the health of your fish. Ammonia is excreted by the fish as a waste product. It is extremely toxic to the fish and is broken down into less toxic nitrite by the beneficial bacteria in the filter of your aquarium. Ammonia is most toxic to fish when the pH is alkaline and the temperature is high, so it is most dangerous in cichlid or marine aquaria. Any ammonia present in the aquarium water will cause major health problems for the fish. Toxic ammonia can build up in aquaria where there are not sufficient beneficial filter bacteria to deal with the total waste from all the fish in the aquarium. This situation can commonly arise in new aquaria, when new fish are added, when the filter bacteria have been disrupted (e.g during cleaning), or during accidental mis-dosing of aquarium medications. Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Aquaristics > Ammonium Q: My Ammonia 2 reagent has turned blue, is it still okay to use? A: Our Ammonia 2 reagent can take on a blue colour with time, but it does not affect the performance or results of the test. As long as the test kit is still within date, you can be confident in the reliability of the results it produces. Ensuring good water chemistry in your aquarium is essential to fish health and wellbeing, and having a reliable and accurate test kit makes a difference. For a master test kit, we recommend the API Freshwater Master Test Kit for freshwater tanks and the Salifert Master Reef Testing Combo Kit for saltwater tanks. Both kits contain multiple tests to measure everything from pH to nitrate to nitrite and more to keep your water clean and healthy for your aquatic environment. What to Look For in Aquarium Test Kits What Is TestedSince it can test for 2 to 14 mg/L, it’s a great option for looking at lower oxygen levels, which can happen as tank temperatures warm or equipment is being swapped out. While it may seem like a lower-range test kit, even if you maxout the test, your levels are still safe. Overall, this is a reliable option that’s readily available in many local pet stores and online retailers. CHEMetrics offers test kits for the determination of Ammonia in aqueous solutions employing the well-known Nessler reagent to deliver sensitivity and accuracy within two minutes or less, as well as kits employing the Hydroxybenzyl Alcohol (HBA) method which offers similar sensitivity without generating any mercury-containing waste. Ammonia concentrations are routinely measured in wastewater effluent, drinking water, surface water and seawater. Large pallet items like aquariums are deemed delivered successfully with no damage once the the driver has left the property. If a report of damage is submitted after the driver has left we may be unable to assist with replacements. We recommend refusing a damaged delivery, this is the fastest resolution. If you want to go further, there are test kits that also evaluate water hardness, copper, iron, phosphate, and other water chemistries, but these extra tests might be more complication than you need. Our test kits measure the strength or weakness of a chemical presence according to the degree of colour saturation. Ie – if it is pale in colour, then the chemical concentration is low. If the colour is strong, then the chemical concentration is high. Simply add the reagent to the compound to be tested and match the colour gained against a colour chart included in the kit.

Simply run the water, open the test tube gently (do not twist the cap), and allow the water to dilute and rinse the contents out of the test tube. Avoid getting the contents of the test tube on your skin. This kit therefore measures total ammonium in solution. At physiological pH, nearly all ammonia will exist as ammonium in solution.

Applications

Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Electroplating > Ammonium Khoja S et al. Intermittent lipid nanoparticle mRNA administration prevents cortical dysmyelination associated with arginase deficiency. Mol Ther Nucleic Acids 28:859-874 (2022). Is it correct for the #2 bottle in the API AMMONIA TEST KIT to have a slightly bigger hole in the spout than the #1 does? I’m concerned my test kit isn’t accurate because of this. Ammonia is a colorless, pungent gaseous compound of hydrogen and nitrogen (one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms, NH 3) that is highly soluble in water. Ammonia is an inorganic form of nitrogen that contains hydrogen. It is a plant nutrient often found naturally in water at low levels due to the decomposition of organic plant or animal matter. Higher concentrations in surface waters are toxic to aquatic life.

Further fields of applications are the analysis of foods & beverages and of environmental and agricultural samples (e.g. soil). Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Waste Water > Ammonium Krom, Michael D., Spectrophotometric Determination of Ammonia: A Study of a Modified Berthelot Reduction Using Salicylate and Dichloroisocyanurate, The Analyst, v.105, pp. 305-316, 1980. Ammonia that has not bonded with chlorine during chloramination disinfection is referred to as free ammonia (both NH 4 + and NH 3). At a neutral pH and ambient temperature, almost all free ammonia exists as NH 4 +. As the pH and temperature increase, the amount of NH 3 increases and the amount of NH 4 + decreases. When chloraminated water is released, free ammonia levels increase as monochloramine reacts with various organics and bacteria in the distribution system water, satisfying the chlorine demand. Increased free ammonia levels indicate the onset of nitrification. A sudden drop in free ammonia suggests that nitrification is in process and nitrite is being formed. The free ammonia value is useful in determining the amount of free chlorine needed to increase the monochloramine residual at a booster station. The free ammonia level can be reduced by adding free chlorine at a ratio of 5:1 as Cl 2:N to guide the process and help minimize nitrification potential. Total Ammonia

Hello. We're improving abcam.com and we'd welcome your feedback.

If you are looking to test your ammonia—a couple of examples of this would be if you are doing a fishless cycle or adding new live critters to your tank—then the API Ammonia Test Kit is the best choice. It includes two testing solutions with child-resistant capped bottles, one test tube with a snap-tight cap, two color cards to compare your results, and easy-to-read instructions. We also appreciate that the instructions advise how to correct your water should your results be unfavorable. K-1503 and K-1523 Vacu-vials: 2 month limit on supply is recommended, however refrigeration can extend shelf-life. Q: My pH reagent has changed colour, is it still ok to use? A: Our pH reagent can change colour over time. It will start green, but can change to any colour on the colour chart. This is normal and you will still get accurate results.
